World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world's leading conservation organization, seeks a Program Officer, Food Waste based at our Washington, DC headquarters. The production and consumption of food constitutes the biggest environmental threat to our planet. Eliminating waste and shifting consumption patterns represents our biggest opportunity to establish sustainable and regenerative food systems. Addressing food waste is critical – from field - to fork - to landfill. Under the supervision of the WWF Food Waste Director, the Food Waste Program Officer would help to plan, manage, communicate, and implement all food waste projects, in addition to helping support the development of future proposals. The position will manage projects across a wide variety of institutional work streams including government, schools, food service, hospitality, grocery retail, and technology solutions.

Job Requirements

• Develops, plans and implements oversight of new and ongoing food waste projects and grants. Works with project personnel, grantees, consultants, and others to facilitate coordination, communication, and regular reporting of food waste initiatives. Develops and analyzes project operating plans and grant budgets.

• Reviews the performance and status of all program activities and evaluates and reports these results, as well as recommendations for corrective action. May travel to project sites to monitor and evaluate project progress and reports back, verbally and in writing. May supervise consultants in their work toward project and program goals and objectives.

• Researches and develops fundraising proposals and plans for funding from private foundations and/or government aid agencies. Prepares and finalizes scopes of work, budgets, and administrative information for contracts and to ensure compliance with donor requirements.

• Involved in the development of program strategy. Participates in stakeholder and partner group meetings both in the US and throughout the WWF international network.

• Monitors and analyzes new food and agriculture technical information, policy development issues, and trends related to the program and advises others accordingly. Keeps abreast of food waste and agricultural issues in areas in which WWF has an ongoing interest. Responsible for acquiring and gathering data relevant to specific conservation projects from conservation peers, governmental agencies, and universities.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

• A Bachelor's degree is required.

• A graduate degree in a related field is preferred, such as natural resources management, environmental science, sustainable business management, agriculture, or conservation policy.

• Position requires a minimum of three to five years of experience in either program management, biodiversity conservation, or natural resources management as well as an understanding of food waste reduction and recovery strategies.

• Experience working in food industries is preferred, including hospitality, restaurants, grocery retail, food service, and/or banquets and catering.

• Demonstrated knowledge of fundraising, budgeting, and monitoring donor compliance

• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills

• Excellent research and writing skills

• Strong analytical skills

• Strong project management skills

• Ability to operate with independence, under pressure, to meet deadlines and commitments

• Ability to work on initiatives with multiple and competing priorities

• Ability to work effectively as a team member with a wide range of individuals, possibly across cultures and time zones
