What is the purpose of the role?

The role of the Area Operations Manager is taking responsibility for the leadership, management and safety of field resources with Thames Water personnel and contractors and delivering operational activities within a designated area, or function. You will have accountability for delivering wholesome drinking water to customers in the most efficient way ensuring regulatory compliance is maintained and benefits maximised from regulatory performance commitments. Taking full responsibility for the delivery of demanding Health & Safety targets and ensuring the wellbeing of all employees and achieving all internal and external, including regulatory, targets for quality and compliance.

This position will play a key role in creating and delivering the strategic direction of Water Production giving you the opportunity to make a real difference in Thames Water. This role offers you lots of scope and exposure within Thames where no day is the same. The successful candidate will take a lead role within the senior Water leadership team, providing input, direction and support for the proactive identification and implementation of improvements within the Wholesale Water Business.

What will this role involve?

Managing, developing and coordinating all Water treatment activities within designated area ensuring internal performance targets are met - Health and Safety, financial, regulatory compliance and people development metrics - in addition to driving continuous performance improvements including consistent reductions in the operational cost to serve.

Delivering a consistent approach to asset operation and maintenance to deliver a cost efficient, robust and safe operation 24/7, whilst delivering excellent customer service and minimising the whole life cost of asset ownership.

Responsibility for providing input to the development and delivery of a sustainable Water Production strategy to achieve consistent improvements in financial (TOTEX), People, Customer and Health & Safety KPIs, by driving a culture of safety, performance management and exceptional customer service and experience within designated area and across Water Production.

Ensure sustainable operational capacity is provided through implementation of operations and maintenance strategy, management of directly managed capital works and coordination with capital works programme.

Develop relationships with other Water Production and operational areas and work with the lead teams to formulate and deliver the Water Production strategy and actively seeking external best practice / benchmarking to enhance performance.

Responsible for the leadership of the designated area team, ensuring relevant people plans are in place to deliver current and future requirement in capability and resource.

Accountable for the development of excellent working relationships with internal and external stakeholders including relevant contractors to ensure they are managed, motivated and operate safely.

Responsibility for the delivery of year on year TOTEX efficiency improvements by looking to understand and reduce the end to end costs to serve (£ per Mld).

What are we looking for?

The successful applicant will be educated to degree level or equivalent experience; you will have good leadership experience, capability and vision. Experience of seeking and developing internal and external relationships and can demonstrate how these relationships can create and deliver area improvements. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a proven track record in the management of people, finance, health & safety and customers within an operational environment to deliver outstanding performance. You will have a good commercial understanding of the business including corporate funding, AMP6 investment and TOTEX business plan, ODIs and performance commitments. Due to the nature of the role a valid driving licence is required.

Thames Water information and salary details

The role is based at our Shalford Water Treatment Plant in Guildford, Surrey. We are offering a salary range of £39,270 to £53,130, depending on skills, qualifications and experience.
