Starting Salary: $82,665/yr

SUMMARY:

Responsible for providing leadership, training, supervision, professional development, and oversight of district school health services programs for all students. This includes school nursing, home/hospital services, the School Medicaid reimbursement program and ADA/504 compliance. Also responsible for district-wide child abuse/neglect prevention and reporting, and supervision of the district’s Healthy Schools initiative. May assist with translation and/or communication using second language skills when possible.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following statements of duties, responsibilities, frequency, and percentages are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. D 20% Direct and supervise Itinerant School Nurses, Medicaid personnel and Department Secretary. Provide indirect supervision and training for site-based early childhood, K-8, middle and high school Nurses.

D 10% Ensure adherence to professional standards of school nursing, local and state laws, district policies, rules and regulations that govern school nursing practices, child abuse reporting, school Medicaid reimbursement , home/hospital services and ADA/504.

M 2% Serve as a member of the district’s Incident Response Team.

D 10% Develop and implement policies, procedures and best practices for the District’s health services programs.

D 5% Provide information, recommendations and support as the Health Services resource for proactive and reactive response to crises, litigation concerns and other health-related issues.

D 5% Develop and maintain strong working relationships with local community and state health providers by participating in conferences, meetings and events and clinical standards forums. Maintain awareness and knowledge of state and national school health issues.

W 10% Provide coordination for professional development of Health Services staff including needs assessment, developing structure, scheduling, budgeting and approving requests. Disseminate information on current topics to Health/Office Paraeducators and school Nurses by holding meetings, distributing reports, performing workshops and/or visiting buildings.

W 5% Coordinate District-wide home/hospital services, including contracting of Colorado Department of Education (CDE) licensed home instructor services. Ensure that services are delivered to homebound students who have appropriate medical need for them. Collaborate with Exceptional Student Services to provide home/hospital services to children with IEPs.

W 3% Provide recommendation and consultation for staff on specific health conditions that require modifications or accommodations to programs to return or remain in the school setting.

W 5% Collaborate with the Medicaid consultant to create innovative, student-oriented health services based on the Aurora Local Services plan, utilizing Medicaid reimbursement funds.

W 10% Provide supervision and training to implement identification, services and monitoring related to plans for students who qualify under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 throughout the district.

W 3% Develop, administer and monitor the Health Services budget. Assist with coordinating the budget and initiating requisitions as needed. Write and manage therapy grant fund.

W 10% Promote and develop innovative health projects to improve disease management, disease prevention and wellness promotion for students in APS (ie School Based Health Centers, Healthy Schools Initiative. This may include grant-writing.

Ongoing 2% Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master’s degree in nursing or related health or educational field.

EXPERIENCE:

3 years of experience in school nursing or a related field. Experience working with community resources and students with chronic and acute health conditions in the school setting is essential. Three years of management/supervisory experience in health-related field preferred.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EQUIPMENT & OTHER:

Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with diverse populations and to collaborate with a variety of community organizations. Ability to utilize technology to improve services. Advanced knowledge of educational and school health systems including Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Individuals with Disabilities Educational Act (IDEA), Standards of School Nursing Practice and Colorado School Nurse Practice Act. Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers. English language skills required. Oral and written fluency in second language may be preferred or required based on building assignment.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:

Registered Nurse in State of Colorado and CDE School Nurse license.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY:

Directly supervises employees in the Health Services Department. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; promoting and transferring employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding, disciplining and terminating employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems. Responsibilities include supervision of adherence to health standards.

BUDGET AND/OR RESOURCE RESPONSIBILITY:

Responsible for developing, administering and monitoring the Health Services budget and initiating requisitions. Participate in coordinating the home/hospital budget with the Exceptional Student Services Department. This position also has budget authority for Medicaid Reimbursement Program and related grants.
