Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) is a dynamic and vibrant four-year public college located in the beautiful Berkshire Hills in Western Massachusetts. MCLA is the Commonwealth's public liberal arts college of the Massachusetts State University System. The Department of Fine and Performing Arts is currently accepting applications for a full-time, tenure track, Assistant Professor position beginning September 1, 2014. This unique program is one of the few in the nation and one of the only public programs in New England, and is jointly sponsored by the FPA, Business, and English/Communications departments. Students gain exposure to visual art, music, and theatre, and then consider these disciplines in relation to broader issues in arts management. The program is highly interactive, combining theory and practice; coursework is enriched and extended through opportunities for hands-on learning through campus cultural programs, including the MCLA Presents! performing arts series, MCLA Gallery 51 on Main Street in North Adams, and B-HIP, an immersive, upper-level arts management internship program. Faculty and students also work in conjunction with the many outstanding cultural institutions of the Berkshire, including MASS MoCA, Shakespeare and Co., and the Normal Rockwell Museum, among others.
In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will assist the coordinator of the Arts Management program, including curriculum and program development, advising, supervising internships, supporting recruitment efforts and making and maintaining connections with other college institutions.
This position is contingent on final budgetary approval.
QUALIFICATIONS: Appropriate earned terminal degree in the arts, management or related field is required (MFA, MBA or doctorate). The position requires demonstrated substantial and successful experience in either performing arts management or visual arts management or both. Candidates should be creative, engaged and energetic professionals with an understanding of trends in the arts and cultural sector; have a demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse student population, an entrepreneurial orientation, and the ability to collaborate with campus departments and outside institutions; the ability to teach a range of courses covering topics such as: nonprofit management, marketing, program development, fundraising, leadership, board/staff development, and strategic planning. Prior successful teaching experience at the college level and a record of appropriate scholarly and/or artistic work is also required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Teaching in a liberal arts-focused college or the ability to support the liberal arts mission of the college; experience with developing and managing certificate and graduate programs; familiarity with online teaching; capacity and ability to work with diverse communities, organizations and people; entrepreneurial experience; grant writing experience, and/or program management experience.
Additional experience in one or more of the following areas would be desirable: national/international cultural policy, entrepreneurship/for-profit arts models, and creative economic development.
