We feel that it is very important to help our associates save toward their retirement goals. 99 Cents Only Stores has one of the best 401(k) plans available in the retail industry. The Company matches 100% of the first 3% of employee contributions and 50% of the next 2% of employee contribution for a total company match of 4%. The company match is 100% vested immediately. Additionally, eligible associates may rollover an existing 401(k) balance from a previous employer at any time.

99 Cents Only Stores dates back to the 1960’s when the company’s founder, Dave Gold, inherited a tiny liquor store in downtown Los Angeles and decided to run a test by selling bottles of wine at a fixed price-point of 99 cents. The test was instant success, and Dave thought that selling everything in the store for 99 cents would be hugely popular.
He finally put this idea to work in 1982, when he spotted a building for lease and decided it would be a great location for the first 99 Cents Only Stores.
On “lucky” Friday, the 13th of August in 1982, Dave and Sherry Gold opened the first 99 Cents Only Store in Los Angeles. To celebrate the Grand Opening, Dave decided to sell television sets for only 99 cents to the store’s first 9 customers. More than 300 people showed up to stand in line and wait for the store to open. The huge line caught the media’s attention, and more than 10 TV outlets covered the store’s first day. The success of this first grand opening inspired a tradition that continues today, with every new store offering incredible 99-cent deals for televisions and other exciting products.
Over the years, the Company grew with new stores in California, and after the Company went public in 1996, 99 Cents Only Stores began opening locations in new markets including Arizona, Nevada and Texas.
