IITA is recruiting to fill the vacant position of:

Job Title: Research Supervisor

Ref: IITA-HR-NRS2015-049
Location: Ibadan

Recruitment Type: National (1-year renewable contract)
Position/Responsibilities

Successful candidate will among other things perform the following:

Routine extraction of high quality DNA from cassava accessions;

Testing of quantity and quality of DNA;

Preparation of DNA for outsourcing of DNA based assays;

Analyse GBS results as routine identity confirmation of cassava accessions;

Support the work of the postdoctoral fellow and other staff as required;

Perform all other related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Qualification, Experience and Skills

Qualification:

B.Sc/HND in Plant Science, Biology, Chemistry or related field with a minimum of two (2) years’ relevant experience.

Competencies:

Experience in extraction of high quality DNA from plants.

Experience in basic procedures and techniques in molecular biology.

Have good communication skills.

Computer literate.

Be safety and security precaution.

Have good sense of cleanliness.

Be a team player.

Job Title: Laboratory Technician I

Location: Ibadan
Recruitment Type: National (2 year renewable contract)

Position/ Responsibility

Successful candidate will among other things perform the following:

Assist in Meristem culture (Yam and Cassava);

Assist in all crop introduction with field sampling;

Assist in index sampling and subculture (for distribution and conservation);

Assist in necrosis and contamination sorting;

Assist in post flask management;

Assist in fumigation as meristem culture trainer;

Perform all other related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Qualification/Requirement

National Diploma (ND) in General Agriculture or equivalent

Minimum of (2) years in related field.

Job Title: Laboratory Technician I (Yam)

Position/Responsibilities

Successful candidate will among other things perform the following:

Assist in Yam in Vitro introduction via meristem culture;

Assist in yam sample preparation for indexing and acclimatization;

Assist in yam in vitro processing (multiplication, Conservation);

Update yam database and handle yam request and distribution;

Perform all other related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

National Diploma (ND) in General Agriculture or equivalent with minimum of (2) years in related field.

Job Title: Laboratory Attendant II

Position/Responsibilities

Successful candidate will among other things perform the following:

Assist in washing and cleaning of laboratory equipment’s;

Assist in PTC work particularly for cryopreservation and cryo research;

Perform all other related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow, Cassava DNA Fingerprinting for Genetic Resources Management

Ref: DDG-R4D/PDF/GRM/11/15
Location: Ibadan

Recruitment Type: National (1-year renewable contract)

Position/Responsibilities

The successful applicant will use the existing GBS data to develop an informative panel of allele specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and be responsible for the applicability/suitability of the SNPs panel for cassava identity validation.

He or she will also be involved in all aspects of DNA fingerprinting of cassava accessions using this panel.

Terms of Reference

Conversion of SNP markers from GBS to a panel of informative allele-specific assays (LGC genomics or Illumina SNP chip) for fingerprinting and validation of the identity of accessions within cassava germplasm collection maintained by the GRC.

DNA fingerprinting of cassava accessions of GRC and use in identity confirmation and studies of genetic relatedness.

Liaison with external service providers for SNP assays and their interpretation.

Liaison with GRC Database Manager on storage of fingerprint information linked to accession level information.

Capacity building of GRC staff and students.

Contributions to reports and publications.

Qualification, Experience and Skills

The candidate should have a PhD in Plant Genetics, Bioinformatics or related discipline. Experience in DNA markers and their application to crop improvement would be an advantage

Core Competencies

Sound understanding of population genetics and diversity analyses.

Experience with the analysis of next generation sequencing data.

Good knowledge of sample tracking systems such Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMs).

Familiarity with plant genetic resources, diversity analysis and genebanks would be an advantage.

Basic knowledge in Linux, R and related packages, scripting knowledge would be an advantage.
