Since April Fools is the day for elaborate pranks, jokes and fun, for this special day, we’ve prepared a very special post! Nowadays we’re all constantly on our phones. Setting up meetings, swiping right on Tinder, Snapchatting selfies and just being complete idiots. What most of you don’t know is that the most important apps on mobile phones are… games!

We all have a love-hate relationship with them. They’re perfect for killing time before class or while waiting for food and there’s so many different options, you’ll never get bored. While we’ve skipped the time-honoured classics such as Temple Run, Subway Surfers, Angry Birds, Flappy Bird, Fluffy Birds…. this is a lot of birds. There’s something for everyone in these hidden gems, so scroll on down and find something that suits you.
Neko Atsume
A casual no-fuss game about cute cats doing cute things
Neko Atsume is a free-to-play mobile game by Japanese developer Hit-Point. Its objective is simple: put out virtual food in your virtual yard for virtual stray cats. When they arrive you can take pictures of them for your virtual album and when they leave you can accept their gifts of fish. You can buy more food and more toys with the fish you’re gifted or you can upgrade and renovate your yard.
We’re not exaggerating when we say that almost everyone we know has this app on their phone. We laugh over Tubbs, the fat cat who eats all the food, and gush over Billy the Cowboy Cat.
Neko Atsume is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play, and while it is largely free-to-play, we do encourage you to support your favourite games by purchasing at least once.

Crossy Road
…why did the chicken cross the road?
Crossy Road is another fun, free-to-play game that’s easy to pick up and play. Your aim is to navigate yourself through the busy lanes of traffic and get to the other side. “What’s on the other side?” We have no idea. Best ask Adele that question. Along the way you’ll dodge cars, hop across lily pads and collect coins. With those coins you can purchase new characters via Gacha, a random capsule machine. You can choose to play as a unicorn, PSY, the Doctor’s Tardis or even as #thedress.
Crossy Road became an instant hit with our non-gaming friends and family because of its casual arcade-like style and clear objectives. Available on both iOS and Android devices for free, there is also a DLC (downloadable content) that you can purchase if you wish to support the creators, Hipster Whale.

Ookujira – Giant Whale Rampage
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a giant flying whale on a rampage!
Ookujira – Giant Whale Rampage is another random, but extremely fun and addicting game that is free-to-play and available for download right now. The Earth is under attack! Evil alien robots from outer space are invading cities and only you can help them, (because it just so happens that you are Ookujira, an ancient a giant flying whale with super powers). A very cute giant flying whale with super powers.
It’s runs on a one-touch play control system that’s easy to understand but takes a while to master. And while we will download anything that has to do with aliens, the well-designed graphics and playful pastel colours just make it that much better.
Ookujira – Giant Whale Rampage is only available on iOS right now with no real plans of expansion into Android hardware. While the entire game is free-to-play, you can also purchase Diamonds, the game’s premium currency, to support independent game developer Reiha.

Ultimate Kept Man Life
Be a man. Be a boss monkey.
Ultimate Kept Man Life is a game about the ultimate kept man life. Literally. You play as an unemployed, useless and somewhat attractive (but not really) young man whose rich girl friend spoils you rotten. You love her, you really do, but her ‘scary, frightening and scary’ father hates you. The goal is to get her father off your back and prove that you aren’t useless – even though you are.
So you start by buying her flowers – with her money – to say thank you, and then you take her for a drive around town – in the car she bought you. But don’t think it’s all fun and games! If her father catches you outside, he’ll confiscate all your money (oh no!).
Ultimate Kept Man Life is a clicker game that has a ridiculous premise and an outrageously stupid protagonist (you). Like Neko Atsume, there is a way to purchase ‘premium currency’ but it is completely unnecessary in running or playing the game and is there more as a way to support the developer.

Seven Knights
Save the bad guy, try not to die. Wait, what?
For those looking for a longer-term gaming fix, then Seven Knights may be the game you’re looking for. Originally a Korea-only game, this popular RPG (Role-Playing Game) has developed a cult following all over the world (including myself). You play as Evan, a young sort-of-lame adventurer looking to uncover the truth hidden behind a necklace his late father left him. Along the way he makes friends, defeats monsters, gets into a bunch of trouble and has a lot of fun.
Seven Knights is ultimately a team-building game with a great community, plenty of challenges and a development team that loves to make weird events – for April Fools, if you raise a mushroom you get a reward. There’s something new every week, and something for everyone no matter the age.
Seven Knights is free to download and free to play on iOS and Android. There are optional DLCs for those who don’t mind spending a bit of money to support your favourite developers.
