Look people, there’s some things you need to know, alright?

1. MZB supported her husband’s pedophilia and on occasion recruited for him.

2. Misty Lackey doesn’t believe in equality (or marriage) for gay people - never mind what she writes. That’s fiction. She doesn’t give much a fuck for REAL gay people and is incredibly transphobic.

3. Lois McMaster Bujold believes (or did) black and brown people didn’t start reading science fiction until the invention and popular use of the internet. She does not think it’s something that interested them.

4. Emma Bull is married to Wankerface Shitsallot and is aware of his racism, creepinest and violence against non-white women and young girls and says and does nothing. In fact makes excuses for him and herself that they’re both from another era.

5. Sara Monette (author, friend of Elizabeth Bear and WS) knows similarly and does nothing. She also believes (or did) that black people don’t value education.

6. Elizabeth Bear will stand by and watch her white fans accost women of colour, and threaten violence, especially of WoC BW and also do nothing. She also thinks being pagan is equal to facing institutional racism. And that being pagan prevents her from being racist.

7. Patrick Nielsen Hayden and his wife Teresa feel attempts at promoting diversity in SF is persecuting whiteness and Teresa once threatened to blacklist anyone with publishing ambitions who confronted her on that piont.

8. Charles Stross is a racist.

9. Harlan Ellison is a racist and sexist and deeply embedded in rape culture.

10. Peter David is, yes, Jewish. But is also incredibly racist and denies that racist US culture has affected him on any level.

These are things you should know.

I should add Greg Rucka to the list too, but cannot remember off the top of my head, unlike the others, why I pulled away hard from him. I think it’s transphobia, but couldn’t swear to it. But just don’t be surprised if you’re someone who cares about other human beings, even when they’re not just like you - if he suddenly disappoints too. It won’t really be ‘sudden’. You’ll just be suddenly ‘aware’.

12: Patricia Wrede: Racist. Stubbornly so even when confronted.

"I’m currently assuming there will be African slaves, possibly even more (since there won’t be any Native Americans to have already done a certain amount of prepping land for human occupation, nor to be exploited later).”

And for people possibly going: “Receipts.”

Look up Racefail 09. MammothFail… .Look 2009 into 2010 a lot of authors showed their truth, alright? And MLackey’s opinions are up on her website (if not check wayback). And MZB was well known in some circles, but I learned the truth of it all some… 13? 15 years ago? Like the net was still kinda new enough and people found a way to have a voice.

13. Neil Gaiman:  Anti-NDN, Ablist. And believes that people who use the word racist against his own words, writing and actions are doing so as a ‘cheap ploy’ and said word should be used for truly weighty matters. Not just towards minorities. But he’ll decide if OTHER white people are properly using the word towards him or similar actions too.

Notes:

I have no intention of even being the Archivist for what was a little head’s up. But it turns out that there are STILL some things I know, others didn’t - particularly (trigger warning) about MZB’s own crimes against children - active vs passive. Thus the reason I stopped being able to go near Sword & Sorcery anthologies years ago, even when someone else edited. Because that’s her legacy.

14. Anne McCaffrey: Of Pern and Acorna fame. She of the (trigger warning) ‘tent peg rape can turn a man gay’. And she who used to hunt down fan MOO’s and MUD’s and threaten to close them if people made the WRONG characters gay - that is she believed gay men had to be effeminate and bonded to greens, and gay women all butch and bonded to blues and anything else was anathema. And it was about phermones. If you’ve neve read Pern, none of this will make sense to you. But OFFICIAL (that is stamped by her) Pern rps got to exist and others got cease and desist.

15: R. Heinlin: Gonna assume everyone knows about his racist ass.

TLDR: Your favs are problematic. SF classics are problematic. SF Old Guard is problematic. SF New Guard has plenty problematic. SF Founders (contemporary) have been, strenuously problematic.

For every Ursula le Guin, there’s been 5 to 6 Heinlin’s. And that’s me being ‘sparing’.

Anyway yeah - this is likely the end of it on my end, cause I had my wake-up call on the true state of SF. I’m not going through it twice for someone else when there’s history if people only cared to look.

Someone else can add to the list - which is longer than this for sure. There’s obvious names not mentioned. And my original intent was to list ones people don’t seem to often think of, cause they weren’t there when the ugliness came out. And people started demanding readers have Ph.d’s in comparative literature before analyzing the racism in their works and current words - then quickly shut up when PoC started pulling out their ivory tower academic creds.

Though the point is; if they only want Ph.d’s/Ph.d types reading their works - why are they publishing fiction and not in pure academic journals?

Actually the point is some folks will say any shit when caught out on their isms. Some will flounder and apologise publically while harrassing privately. Some will apologise privately but continue to be an ass publically. Some will pitch a camp and defend the one still being an ass publically as ‘just misunderstood’. You’ve seen forms of it before - for every white mass murderer spree shooter.
