Police Chief Agrees Zimmerman is “Ticking Time Bomb”
The punches just keep coming for George Zimmerman. The police chief for the Florida town where the former neighborhood watch volunteer resides agrees that he is a “ticking time bomb” and another “Sandy Hook” waiting to happen. Police Chief Steve Bracknell has sense tried to distance himself from the comments, which he sent in a response to Santiago Rodriguez, who was upset about Zimmerman’s release earlier this week. You can read Bracknell’s remarks here. As of Friday morning, Zimmerman had not been charged following the domestic dispute.
California Increases Minimum Wage
Citizens in California are well on their way to earning $10 an hour as opposed to $8. “The minimum wage has not kept pace with rising costs. This legislation is overdue and will help families that are struggling in this harsh economy,” said Gov. Jerry Brown. Already passed by the senate, the bill must now be approved by the governor, who’s already voiced his support of the raise.
Sorority Discriminates Against Black Women
The prejudices on the campus of the University of Alabama reminds us why the National Pan-Hellenic Council was formed. The Crimson White, the school’s student paper, published an exposé alleging that at least four sororities ousted a Black woman because of her race. I guess they forgot it’s 2013.
Pharrell Defends ‘Blurred Lines’
Even though Pharrell is engaged in a battle with Marvin Gaye’s estate over Robin Thicke’s megahit “Blurred Lines,” he wants to make one thing clear — he has incredible respect for the late soul legend. “I’m a huge fan of Marvin Gaye. He is a genius. He is the patriarch,” Pharrell said Thursday night. Pharrell told The Associated Press on Thursday night that “Blurred Lines” and Gaye’s “Got to Give it Up” aren’t similar at all.
Rap/Reggae Artist Prince Jazzbo Dies
Rap reggae performer and producer, Prince Jazzbo, died in his Jamaican home Thursday, according to the Associated Press. The 62-year-old had battled lung cancer, his daughter told the AP. His more well-known songs are “Croaking Lizard” and “Crab Walking.”
Rap on Syria
News anchors have been reporting on the Syria and U.S. dilemma for weeks now. Senegalese rapper Makhtar “Xuman” Fall and Didier Awadi decided to chime in and break down the situation for those who still might be confused. The “Journal Rappe” airs on a Senegalese network. The two reenacted a newscast and rapped about Syria in French.
United Mistakenly Offers Cheap Fare Sale
Thanks to an error, a few lucky flyers were able to snag a deal better than anything Groupon or Expedia could offer. People were able to buy tickets between $5 and $10 through United Airlines’ website. A representative says this mistake was made by a person and that it isn’t definite if United will “honor” the tickets, CNN reports.
University Band Makes Tribute to Trayvon
Alabama State University’s marching band dedicated their halftime show to Trayvon Martin. Spelling out his first name, the band asked everyone to stand to honor the life of the fallen teen.
