Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday. “LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: developing communications skills; articulating thoughts, feelings, needs; speaking, listening, reading, comprehending, writing, and spelling.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY: “Vocabulary” development is 2 years through adult. The more opportunity children have for positive language/vocabulary experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
SOME DEVELOPMENTAL Language/Vocabulary: “Vocabulary,” Pt. 11, tidbits for the reading/literacy experience with your Toddler/Preschooler focused on building a strong foundation for reading and literacy:
**LOOK FOR similarities between what you and your child have just read and your own lives or other books.
**DISCUSS WHAT is really taking place in the story and the relationship between the words and pictures.
**TELL THE STORY again in your own words or by acting it out.
