Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: developing communications skills; articulating thoughts, feelings, needs; speaking, listening, reading, comprehending, writing, and spelling.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “Language/Vocabulary: NATIVE LANGUAGE, RECOGNITION OF SPEECH” development is birth – 5 years. The more opportunity children have for positive language/vocabulary experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
Some “NATIVE LANGUAGE, Recognition of Speech” Pt. 7 tidbits:
* READ either with background silence or with gentle and soft, non-chaotic music as a backdrop – you want Baby to have a supportive environment to build the brain’s language center.
* WHEN HE IS calm and you’re able to relax and share a nurturing moment with him on your lap, look at and read or tell a story from a colorful picture book (‘board book,’ cloth or vinyl).
* DON’T WORRY about finishing books since babies rarely make it cover to cover.
* TALK TO HER as you’re carrying on the daily chores – How you’re making dinner, Why you’re doing the laundry, and What you see as you drive down the street.
