Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: developing communications skills; articulating thoughts, feelings, needs; speaking, listening, reading, comprehending, writing, and spelling.

THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “Language/Vocabulary: NATIVE LANGUAGE, RECOGNITION OF SPEECH” development is birth – 5 years. The more opportunity children have for positive language/vocabulary experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

Some “NATIVE LANGUAGE, Recognition of Speech” Pt. 6 tidbits:

*  BY 6 MONTHS, keying in on sounds (speech components called phonemes) that make up his native tongue which will largely establish the breadth of his later vocabulary, Baby also begins to lose some ability to detect differences in the speech sounds of non-native languages; and at the same time, he becomes better at detecting the sounds of his own native language.

*  IF YOU have the skill, speak to her in multiple languages to help foster the ability to hear sounds necessary to speak more than 1 language.

*  DURING THE DAY play soothing background music around Baby with vocals in the chosen language(s) you’re fostering.

Next week – Language/Vocabulary: “Native Language,” Pt. 7
