Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: developing communications skills; articulating thoughts, feelings, needs; speaking, listening, reading, comprehending, writing, and spelling.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “Language/Vocabulary: NATIVE LANGUAGE, RECOGNITION OF SPEECH” development is birth – 5 years. The more opportunity children have for positive language/vocabulary experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
Some “NATIVE LANGUAGE, Recognition of Speech” Pt. 5 tidbits:
* AT BIRTH, Baby is equipped to speak any language.
* SOUNDS he hears are used to build the brain pathways needed to speak a language fluently, and in the coming year or so those neural links (maps) build vocabulary.
* WITHIN 6 MONTHS, she filters out sounds she won’t need for her native tongue.
* IF “NEW-SOUND” pathways (phonemic speech components) aren’t built by age 5, Baby may lose the ability to speak a foreign language without an accent.
