Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
DEVELOPMENTAL Skill Definition, “LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY:” developing communications skills; articulating thoughts, feelings, needs; speaking, listening, reading, comprehending, writing, and spelling.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY” development covered in 3 areas:
– NATIVE LANGUAGE, RECOGNITION OF SPEECH: birth to 5 years
– SECOND LANGUAGE: birth to 10 years
– VOCABULARY: 2 years through adult
The more opportunity children have for positive language/vocabulary experiences during these critical periods, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
Some general LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY tidbits:
* BABBLING BEGINS the ability to understand spoken language and express one’s thoughts, feelings and needs. By mimicking and emulating adults, children develop more complicated language skills.
* IN TIME the use of language both verbal and written is more fully expressed through reading, writing, math, spelling and other academic subjects.
* COMMUNICATING and articulating thoughts becomes increasingly significant as children begin to make new relationships and explore their own personalities.
* LISTEN TO, talk to and read to children. Expose them to books with irresistible illustrations, lively patterned language, humor and memorable stories and poems. (The developing brain likes the lilt and rhythm of poetry).
