Have You Started Planning for your
Child’s College Education?

The cost of earning a college degree today can easily be over $100,000. Yet society continues to promote the pursuit of a higher education. As a result of society’s trends, parents often save for educational expenses with “529 plans” that can expose them to the risk of the stock market. Jonathan Loyhayem can show you alternative solutions that have the following features:

* Protection from down markets.

* Income tax-deferred growth of cash value.

* Flexible access to cash accumulation.

* In most cases, an income tax-free death benefit for your children.

SEPTEMBER Annual Sales

MAJOR SALES EVENT: Labor Day sales and sales following Labor Day are clearance days.  Stores need to sell warm weather stuff and restock their shelves with Christmas and cold weather goods.

TYPICAL ANNUAL SALES: Major clearance after Labor Day.  Look for sales on summer and spring clothing.  Look for also sales on camping, cook ware, dishes, fans, patio and pool, recreation, tires.

MAJOR PURCHASES TYPICALLY ON SALE: New cars from current year model after new model introduction of next year’s models (NMI), furniture, air conditioners.

TRAVEL: The September shoulder season travel (just after the peak season) is often a good bargain and less crowded.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: apples, cantaloupe, celery, chard, corn, cucumbers, grapes, green peppers, lima beans, nectarines, pears, tomatoes.  NOTE: With some produce now available all during the year, many people have forgotten when fruits and vegetables are really in season. Buying in season means that these items are often cheaper, fresher, taste better and that money may be going to local farmers.

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

DEVELOPMENTAL Skill Definition, SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: bonding, building relationships, appreciating differences, self-esteem, self-expression, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, curiosity, motivation, persistence, self-control.

THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: EMPATHY, ENVY” development is about 2 years – 9 years.  The more opportunity children have for positive social-emotional experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

Some Social/Emotional: EMPATHY, ENVY tidbits, 5-year-olds and up:

*  WHEN PERTINENT teach your child to request, bargain with, negotiate with, and apologize to the other children in her play group.

*  KNOW THAT what feels like anger to a 5- or 6-year-old may really be fear or confusion.

*  GETTING ON his level, eye to eye, be an ‘active listener’ saying, “I can see you are SAD about going home,” “….ANGRY at your friend….”

Next week – “Social/Emotional: Empathy, Envy” Pt. 10
