Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT points, 3-year-olds:
• For small fingers, provide “fat” primary crayons. Since Toddlers’ hands don’t know his strength, regular-sized crayons are likely to break.
• Most 3-year-olds can draw a vertical line, which means now’s the perfect time to consider opening a display gallery on the fridge.
• Build your “LEARNING LIBRARY” by choosing developmental learning tools, designed to “grow” as children grow, with features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in 1 toy, so Baby learns developmentally at 3 months with an item and at 2 years, for example, Toddler is ready for different features of the same toy.
SOME DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for 3-year-olds and the developmental skills utilized:
• PUPPETS/role playing – she can be anything! Expressing feelings, replaying life’s scenarios and imaginative play are on the path to becoming socialized. (fine motor, gross motor, social/emotional, life skills, creativity, auditory, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
• LACING/threading – Fine motor practice (on a lace with a long, firm tip) stringing large colorful beads, sequencing, and creating color patterns are eye-hand coordination, pre-math and pre-reading practice, all at once. (tactile, fine motor, gross motor, creativity, visual, thinking/learning)

Sunny is a 4 year old pure-bred Old English Bulldog that needs a new home
He’s brown and white and is very playful and wonderful with kids. His current owners are not home enough and therefore don’t feel that Sunny gets all of the love and… affection that he not only needs, but deserves! Sunny was diagnosed with a minor thyroid issue about a year ago but takes one pill a day to regulate it…and the current owners have probably one year’s worth of medication for that and he is on a lean diet.
