This issue of the Journal of Clinical Pathology comprises a series of review articles on some of the latest developments in gastrointestinal pathology. While the articles may appear somewhat eclectic, hopefully they will cater to a diverse range of interests from routine diagnostic pathology to more basic research. The latter is focused on colorectal cancer with three papers highlighting the role of circulating tumour cells and the epithelial mesenchymal transition, the role of autophagy and neoadjuvant radiotherapy-associated molecular events in colorectal cancer.

These reviews shed light on some of the mechanistic issues in the pathogenesis, spread and response to treatment in colorectal cancer.

More diagnostic issues are discussed in the reviews by Drs Bateman
