There used to be this place I visited back home.  It was a little Mexican hole-in-the-wall.  We’re talking authentic…with salsa so hot your eyelashes curled when you smelled it.  They only had a few tables, so you really couldn’t stay and eat.  This was a grab ‘n go kinda joint.  And trust me when I say that I loved grabbing.

My favorite “snack” (ahem) was their Tortas de Colita de Pavo.

Do you speak Spanish?  If you do…you know THAT is a turkey butt sandwich.  Yeah, I said turkey butt sandwich.  Okay, technically turkey “tail”, but my dad always teased me and told me it was turkey behind.  Whatever.  They had some dang fine behinds on bread, if I may be so bold.

So, when I heard about this week’s Global Street Food #SundaySupper, hosted by Bea of The Not So Cheesy Kitchen and Heather of girlichef, all I could think of was those tortas.

Tortas are Mexican sandwiches that are usually filled with meat and fixings, and they are most often served on a bolillo roll.  They are considered one of the most traditional types of “street food” in Mexico.  Why?  Because you just grab ‘n go, people.  Grab ‘n go…and then eat.

Now, imagine my surprise when I decided on making tortas and turkey butts were nowhere to be found.  Who knew it was so hard to find bagged turkey butts?  Not I.

So, I settled on my other favorite torta…Tortas de Milanesa.  Tortas de Milanesa are fried pork/beef/chicken cutlet sandwiches.  And they are divine.  I decided on pork for this version, because pork is the BEST white meat.

These are super simple to make.  And they are a total comfort food for me.

My wife had NEVER had a torta before.  *faint*  She’s requested we have them once a week since she tasted these.  I’ve taught her well.

I found the perfect recipe for these tortas on one of my very favorite food blogs, Spicie Foodie.  Nancy, miss Spicie Foodie herself, really knows her way around a torta.  And you will too…after you make these!

Tortas de Milanesa (Fried Pork Cutlet Sandwiches)

Ingredients (6-8 sandwiches)

1 lb. thinly sliced pork cutlets (boneless)

1 cup breadcrumbs

1 tsp. garlic powder

1 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. black pepper

3 eggs, whisked together in a large, shallow bowl

Oil (for frying)

6-8 bolillo rolls (or other sandwich roll)

Toppings: refried beans, sour cream, crumbled queso fresco cheese (or feta), shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, thinly sliced onion, avocado slices, hot sauce

Instructions

Heat a thin layer of oil over medium heat in a large skillet.

Mix breadcrumbs, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper together in a shallow dish.

Dip the pork cutlets into the eggs, and then into the breadcrumb mixture, coating pork on all sides.

Once oil is hot, fry pork on both sides until browned and cooked through. Drain pork on a paper towel-lined plate once removed from the skillet after frying.

To assemble torta: Cut bolillo rolls in half. Spread a layer of refried beans on the bottom half of the bread. Top with pork, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, and a few dashes of hot sauce. Spread a thin layer of sour cream on the top half of the bread before topping the sandwich.

Serve immediately.

Boom!  Flavor town.

Sometimes the easiest things to make taste the most delicious.

Now to find those turkey butts…
