Position Title: MSL Manager (MSLM)

Division: MEDICAL EDUCATION & INFORMTION DEPARTMENT

Reports To: MEDICAL MANAGER

Job Function Summary

Overview:

The Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) Manager (MSLM) is responsible for leading, developing and managing the MSLs. The MSLM plans, organizes and directs the activities of the MSLs within a Medical Affairs (MAF). He/she develops strategic business plans in concert with MAF and appropriate cross-functional partners, and is accountable for the successful implementation of MAF strategies at the field level. The MSLM is responsible for collaborating with CVTs on the development of MSL role and product related materials, execution of training for the MSL team. The MSL Manager in collaboration with Medical Adviser (MA) is responsible for developing and managing a Key Opinion Leader development plan following MSL goals, objectives and tactics. The MSLM may be accountable for supporting special projects and initiatives as part of the MAF.

MSLM leads and manages a highly trained (PharmD, PhD or MD) group of MSLs who are accountable for identifying, establishing and maintaining strong, scientifically-based professional, peer-to-peer relationships with influential, academic-based physicians and researchers, as well as other designated national and regional opinion leaders. This requires a broad knowledge of the needs within multiple geographies and an ability to execute scientific business plans to meet those needs. MSLM participates on MAF/CVT cross-functional project teams, either as a leader or a team member. He/she must balance the short-term scientific objectives with long-term goals (e. g. KOLs relationship development). The MSLM constantly adapts to changing business priorities as dictated by such projects and activities as regulatory approvals, therapeutic focus, and project funding. He/she is responsible for deployment (and re-deployment) of personnel and other resources to meet all respective objectives. Position requires a strong working knowledge of the regulatory and compliance environment as it pertains to leading a therapeutic area field-based scientific team.

Key Job Activities:

The MSLM is responsible for functional management of MSLs and thereby:

Functional Management Responsibilities:

* Leads effort to recruit and hire MSLs within the TA

* Build a strong MSL team and responsible for developing, evaluating and delivering core training for MSLs within TA to ensure that educational excellence is achieved

* Manages the performance and development of MSLs towards accountability, ownership and leadership using the means of objective setting, tracking and control of execution and providing resources in accordance with situational demands

* Accountable for the quality and consistency of scientific and medical knowledge of MSLs within TA

* Leads strategy and development of processes and capabilities that optimize the delivery of scientific services to internal stakeholders and external customers

* Responsible for providing consistency within TA as it pertains to compliance of the field-based medical/scientific function

* Provides coaching and feedback on job performance for MSLs within TA

* Drives talent acquisition and development plans, retention of talents and export/rotations across functions and locations if needed

Cross-Functional Responsibilities:

* Accountable for the effective/optimal integration of the MSL Team within the MAF and CVT

* Prioritizes work and resources across the CVT and manages field-based project responsibilities as they pertain to the MSLs

* Leads strategy and development of processes and capabilities that optimize the delivery of services to internal and external customers

* Ensures compliance with local regulatory agency rules and the company SOPs

* Effectively partners with cross-functional team members

* Ensures internal stakeholders are knowledgeable of key opinion leader views and opinions as it pertains to Janssen’ products and relative disease states

* Responsible for identifying and resolving the therapeutic area operational needs/issues and processes of the MSLs and sharing best practices within the MAF/CVT

* Proactively coordinates field need for medical/scientific knowledge required for management and support of company products and relative disease states (both in-line products and products in development)

* Ensures appropriate MSL staffing to meet the needs of MAF/CVT initiatives such as: Advisory Boards, Medical Booths, Educational Events etc.)

* Works closely with the sales leadership to ensure optimal alignment of field resources in delivering therapeutic area goals and objectives in a compliant manner

* Ensures the development and execution of the MAF Brand Operational plans

Additional Responsibilities:

* Attends appropriate scientific meetings to maintain his/her awareness of research activities within therapeutic area

* Presents monthly updates to applicable cross-functional partners and therapeutic business reviews at Medical Affairs Internal Management Team Meetings as requested

* In collaboration with MSLs establishes customer contact with opinion leaders related to key therapeutic area initiatives

* Leads working with cross-functional MAF/CVT members to develop effective brand-on-brand clinical strategies

Job Qualifications

Education: Advanced degree in science-related field (MD, PharmD, PhD) is preferred

Experience: Minimum of 3+ years in the pharmaceutical industry in medical affairs, clinical development, marketing or sales

Knowledge: Strong negotiation, diplomacy, team leadership skills and excellent organizational ability; Ability to take initiative, work independently and delegate; Ability to identify and address issues proactively in a timely manner;

* Medical Doctor, Pharmaceutical or Nature Science university degree

* Demonstrated expertise in drug information communication

* Excellent project management ability

* Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills

* Working knowledge of regulatory requirements

* Ability to critically evaluate both clinical papers and market trends

* Ability to work in a team environment

* Ability to build productive work relationships both internally and externally

* Excellent problem-solving skills

* Highly organized with thorough attention to detail ensuring timely follow-through and closure

* Strong leadership ability

* Proven ability to understand customer segments

* Relevant work experience, scientific acumen and communication skills in order to be accepted by Leading Specialists in peer-to-peer relationship
