The State University of New York at Oswego seeks an exceptional leader to become Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

Posting Date:December 20, 2013

Review Date: Review of applications will begin January 20, 2014 and will continue until finalists are chosen.

Salary: Commensurate with position and experience.

Date of Appointment: July 2014

Description of Responsibilities: The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the intellectual and institutional leader of a college with more than 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students, more than 200 full-time faculty, by far the largest division of an institution that also includes schools of Business, Education, and Communication, Media and the Arts.

The Dean represents the accomplishments, aspirations and needs of the faculty and students to the administration, other schools, and the greater community, and communicates goals, concerns and needs of the administration, other schools and the community to the faculty and students. Responsible for more than 40 academic programs, the Dean supports and cultivates the faculty and enhances resources required for the successful implementation of those programs. The Dean is attentive and committed to faculty and student diversity, shared governance and the increasingly complex and extramural roles the liberal arts and sciences are called upon to engage in communities, local and global.

Responsibilities include supporting faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation; developing and supporting initiatives designed to build and strengthen interdisciplinary collaborations within the College and across the University, providing leadership in external relations, partnership building, fund-raising, and fiscal management.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have:

• A terminal degree and record of academic accomplishments in a department or interdisciplinary program of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

• Administrative experience at the level of department chair or beyond that includes supervision of staff, personnel evaluations, program assessment, budget management, and collaboration with other units.

• A commitment to learner-centered public higher educationand the goals of providing access, promoting diversity, and cultivating critically engaged practitioners in a wide variety of fields.

• A demonstrated commitment to multi- and interdisciplinary programs, global awareness and connection, and student-faculty collaborative research and creative activities.

• The ability to build external relations in support of student and faculty opportunities, program development, and fundraising.

• An independence of vision and the leadership skills necessary to create consensus around that vision.

• A willingness and ability to work cooperatively with other institutional organizations while vigorously advancing the aims of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

• A commitment to extending and enhancing relations between the College and the community, the College and its alumni, the College and the world.

Description of the College: The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences houses programs in the humanities, sciences, and social science. Its faculty members are committed teachers and scholars who work with their students to solve problems and arrive at insights by looking across disciplinary boundaries, working on cutting-edge research, and using technology to connect globally. The College includes 16 academic departments that offer more than 50 degrees and certifications. Approximately 20 percent of CLAS degree programs are interdisciplinary or multi-disciplinary. Disciplines range from Anthropology to Zoology including new initiatives in engineering. The College is also the primary provider of general education and is deeply involved with the School of Education in providing content area education for teacher candidates.
