DePuy Synthes Joint Reconstruction is the Joint Reconstruction business offering orthopaedic devices, solutions and supplies for hip, knee and extremity reconstruction, in addition to cement and operating room products.

Our team of research and development engineers, scientists and technical experts are in the forefront of technology in the medical device industry. This position is organized under the Metallurgy Research group within the Front End R&D group in our Joint Reconstruction business.

The Senior Materials Scientist will develop novel, next-generation materials related technologies and processes for medical devices used in the treatment of musculoskeletal joint diseases. Will interact with business unit product development engineers, the marketing group, operations and quality groups to move projects forward. Participate in metallurgical and microscopy laboratory operations and is expected to conduct and/or manage own research work. Work with colleagues from all disciplines to resolve product quality issues, corrective actions and timely completion of reports.

Strengths should complement the existing research activities of our department. Develop understanding of the orthopaedic device market and clinical and business needs. Become SME in metallurgical scientific discipline, and eventually will mentor others.

Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:

Independently design and conduct research directed toward the discovery and/or development of new materials/technologies for orthopaedic implants and instruments.

Responsible for performing well-conducted lab experiments, including DOE, data analyses, interpretation, report and manuscript preparation with adherence to applicable regulations and procedures.

Participate and consult with the internal and external scientific community to maintain state-of-the-art knowledge for application to experimental work and projects.

Work independently to plan, conduct, and manage multiple materials research projects to meet department and company objectives.

Development, characterization and testing of metals, coatings, or surface modifications.

Development and validation of associated processes and manufacturing methods of new technologies.

Make oral presentations on project work to company staff.

Write technical reports, test protocols and work instructions.

Present and publish research results to scientific and clinical community to support research.

Qualifications
A Bachelors degree in Materials Science Engineering, Metallurgy, Physics or closely related discipline with 5+ yrs industry experience, or Masters degree with 4+ yrs industry experience or PhD with 2+ yrs industry experience is required. Experience with materials used in the medical device industry is an asset. A background in advanced metals such as titanium and super alloys, processes and metallurgical characterization is desired. Good communication and presentation skills must be evident Strong technical writing skills must be evident, as demonstrated through lab reports, abstracts, or peer review publications. Must be able to communicate technical information to a diverse group of technical and non-technical associates. Proven track record of successfully leading research projects/teams is preferred. Must possess an in-depth understanding of metallurgy, and research fundamentals such as metallurgical influence on structure and property relationships. Knowledge in materials processing such as forging, casting, etc.., heat treatment effects and sintering is preferred. Familiarity with metallurgical techniques is required. Familiarity with analytical techniques (mechanical testing, microscopy, SEM/EDS, thermal analyses, and spectroscopy) is desired. Strong analytical and problem solving skills required. Experience in failure analysis is a plus. Self-motivated and self starter is required. Must excel in an environment fostering a cooperative team approach to science.
