SUMMARY / GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB:
Controls and extinguishes fires. The firefighter may drive a vehicle to scene of fire when necessary. For aircraft fires: Positions vehicle considering such factors as wind direction, sources of water, hazards from falling structures, and location of armaments or other aircraft; maneuvers the vehicle to keep the fire in optimum range while ensuring that back flash will not occur. For structural fires: Operates pumps, foam generators, boom and ground sweeps nozzles, and other similar equipment; determines proper pressures for the distances to be pumped and the number of lines being used; maintains a constant awareness of water levels in self-contained tanks and warns hand line and rescue man when tanks are close to running dry. Uses a variety of special protective gear for emergency operations; performs daily preventive maintenance inspection of vehicle and equipment. Performs minor maintenance such as fluid level checks and replenish as required, and draining and flushing tanks when necessary, and otherwise ensuring that all equipment is in serviceable condition.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB FUNCTIONS:
· Drives and operates firefighting vehicles such as P-22, P-24, P-30, P-18, P-23, and P-19.
· Performs crash/resuce and firefighting duties at airfields handling predominantly large or complex aircraft (e.g. fighters, cargo, passenger).
· Performs structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities.
· Performs search and resuce of personnel, and performs or intiates a variety of first aid measures to alleviate further injury, and prepares vicitim(s) for transport to a medical facility.
· Evaluates emergency medical situations and performs dutied as a DOT First Responder or equivalent.
· Maintains firefighting equipment and fire station facilities.
· Complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures
· Participates in the physical fitness, respiratory protection and hearing conservation program.
· Performs daily inspection, maintenance and upkeep of firefighting apparatus, tools and equipment.
· Submits timely and accurate timesheets.
· Maintain proper dress and grooming in accordance with employee handbook and/or standard operating procedures.
· Particpates in all training activities.
· Maintains collateral duties as assigned.
· Performs TSA security screening as required.
· Performs related work as assigned.
WORK CONDITIONS:
· Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work is subject to temperature extreme and inclement weather conditions.
· A member, while wearing full protective clothing and SCBA, is required to safely perform a variety of fire-fighting tasks that require upper body strength and aerobic capacity. This includes: Lifting and carrying tools and equipment (e.g., axe, halligan tool, pike pole, chain saw, circular saw, rabbet tool, high-rise pack, and hose) that weigh between 7 lb and 20 lb (3.2 kg and 9 kg) and are used in a chopping motion over the head, extended in front of the body, or in a push/pull motion.
· Advancing a 13/4in. (45 mm) or a 21/2in. (65 mm) diameter hose line, which requires lifting, carrying, and pulling the hose at grade, below or above grade, or up ladders. In addition to the weight of the hose itself, a 50 ft (15 m) section of charged 13/4in. (45 mm) hose contains approximately 90 lb (41 kg) of water, and a 50 ft (15 m) section of 21/2in. (65 mm) hose holds approximately 130 lb (59 kg) of water.
· Performing forcible entry while utilizing tools and equipment (e.g., axe, halligan tool, chain saw, circular saw, or rabbet tool) that requires chopping, pulling, or operating these items to open doors, windows, or other barriers to gain access to victims, possible victims, or to initiate fire-fighting operations.
· Performing ventilation (horizontal or vertical) utilizing tools and equipment (e.g., axe, circular saw, chain saw, pike pole) while operating on a flat or pitched roof or operating off a ground or aerial ladder. This task requires the fire fighter to chop or push tools through roofs, walls, or windows.
· Other tasks that could be performed can include search and rescue operations and other emergency response actions under stressful conditions, including working in extremely hot and cold environments for prolonged time periods.
· The incumbent works a 40-hour workweek (five 8-hour shifts), with two (2) rotations off-island per year (first at 6 months, second at 1 year). The incumbent also receives 11 paid holidays per year.
TERMS:
Employee health insurance coverage paid at 100%; H&W Dependent coverage – company pays $500. Supplemental life insurance and accidental death & dismemberment insurance is available at an additional cost to employees. 401(k) – 3% pretax matching contribution (50% of up to 6% of deferral) per pay period.
Annual physical. Boot allowance – up to $160 per year upon presentation of receipt.
Paid Time Off (PTO): 1-5 years of service 80 hours/year
5-15 years of service 120 hours/year
15+ years of service 160 hours/year
On-call duty, $100/week. Two (2) hour minimum on a call-out after hours. Employe’s point of hire is Anchorage.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
· Knowledge of basic skills of firefighting methods and techniques used in modern firefighting for protection of life and property.
· Knowledge of the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to water flow, water pressure, water levels, hose line (friction) losses, etc.
· Knowledge of basic and specialized firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures
· Knowledge of basic building design, construction, and occupancy
· Knowledge of the latest changes in aircraft cockpit design, ordnance placement, and cabin layouts to include the operation of hatch or canopy release mechanisms, ejection seat mechanisms, and/or oxygen supply systems
· Knowledge of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders
· Skill in operating telecommunications equipment
· Skill in detecting and recognizing fire hazards.
· Skill in operating various types of firefighting vehicles.
· Skill and dexterity in use and manipulation of tools and equipment used in firefighting operations.
· Ability to operate basic Microsoft computer programs.
· Ability to perform the essential job tasks as outlined in the National Fire
Protection Association (NFPA) 1582
· Ability to demonstrate specific vision abilities required by the job include the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth
· Ability to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds
· Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance
· Ability to perform the essential job tasks associated with firefighting.
· Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action.
