Departmental Overview
We’re currently seeking a Cloud Architect to lead and drive key IT initiatives including Enterprise email, calendar, Google APIs, Google Apps, and cloud middleware services. This position will provide technical leadership to Cloud services teams including setting technical strategies/roadmaps, researching and prototyping emerging technologies, advising junior staff, cultivating technical excellence, and promoting best practices.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities involve conceptualizing, planning, designing, and implementing complete and integrated information technology solutions for the entire campus. Provides oversight for campus mission critical infrastructure and systems for messaging and collaboration technologies especially in the architecture of highly scalable systems that must run in high availability modes such as email, calendaring and web services platforms, and setting campus and system-wide direction for cloud, hybrid-cloud, and public/private outsourcing architectures. Keenly aware of departmental or campus wide business needs and long-term goals. Work on issues that impact design/selling success or address future concepts, products or technologies. Promotes the use of campus information technology standards, often serves as consultant to management.

• Acts as the campus steward for all enterprise cloud architectural specialty area including Enterprise Email, Google API, Google Apps, cloud middleware & architecture.
• Performs the most complex and advanced techniques to work on issues that impact design of future concepts, products or technologies. Especially designing robust architecture, which will automate and monitor themselves to keep the top critical information assets of the University functioning with high availability. Examples include the messaging components tying purchasing systems together, the design of the campus-wide email system from the protocol level analysis to design and integration of subsystems such as those that prevent security breaches and account compromise.
• Serves as top consultant to senior management, especially around critical investments such as technical decision making tied to major Operational Excellence initiatives. In addition, independently performs feasibility analysis on potential future projects to provide management with accurate assessment of the best recommended paths forward for complex, multi-institutional and often multi-million dollar mission critical computer systems. This includes advising on selection of major and critical technological purchases impacting all aspects of the campus enterprise architecture.
• Works independently developing advanced concepts and strategies, especially those which require exceptional knowledge across multiple disciplines such as security, network, application and systems administration, for the purpose of designing next generation architectures which securely link IT assets on campus with new delivery modes such as Google Apps, Amazon AWS, hybrid public-private clouds, and functional data integration standards such as CalDav or OpenStack.
• Leads a team of IT architecture professionals or provides technical guidance to a large development team in the design of highly complex systems. Must be able to exert knowledge and expertise based influence and leadership at the UC Berkeley and UC system level to ensure teams across multiple domains are building to common interpretations of industry standards, and that such systems will be designed for high availability and secure, scalable performance.
• Manage and coordinate day-to-day production support operation and work closely with business stakeholders and technical staff to ensure issues are addressed in timely fashion & in accordance to customer expectations. Provide second-level operational support, troubleshooting, performance, testing/remediation, and security vulnerability.
• Foster development and implementation of common practices and tool sets across software development and operations teams to accelerate the pace of cloud adoption, gain efficiencies in both developmental and operational lifecycles and reduce time and effort required to perform policy and standards compliance auditing.
• Research the latest technical and software industry offerings and provide input towards the selection of products and tools
• Lead and collaborate with other IT teams to ensure quality of services such as scalability, maintainability, extensibility, reusability, availability, security, and performance.
• Work independently and make actionable recommendations to managers, directors, and senior stakeholders based on his/her technical expertise
• Provide mentorship within teams, departments and across campus
• Take a leadership role in technology selection and product/solution evaluation
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
• 10+ years of hands-on experience in at least two IT disciplines (such as technical architecture, solution architecture, network/infrastructure design, system administration/design, application design/development, middleware designs, etc.) in a heterogeneous environment
• Strong technical skills/knowledge and/or experience in:
o Two factor authentication systems: RSA, smartcard, AWS and Google.
o Programming languages: Python, Java and Ada
o Professional Operations and Development teams and their lifecycles
o Designing systems to meet stringent security policy and auditing requirements
o TAWS Advanced Operations and Architecting with AWS classes
o Extensive work with CloudFormation, IAM, S3, S3 policy definitions, EC2, VPC, AutoScaling, Route 53 and Elastic Beanstalk.
o Familiarity with the AWS Services SQS, EMR, RDS, CloudFront and CloudWatch.
• Demonstrated track record of leading high-performance teams toward the successful attainment of challenging goals
• Ability to balance the long-term (or *big picture*) and short-term implications of individual decisions
• Demonstrated reputation for being respected as a leader, influential in the organization, and a team player
• Ability to remain neutral toward technology, vendor and product choices, as well as to be more interested in results than in personal preferences
• Expert understanding of the broader impact of work efforts across architectural system components, critical business processes and applications.
• Proposal development experience, including enterprise and SOA architecture definition, roadmaps, trade studies and basis of estimates is desired.
• Strong experience in different middleware technologies as well as SaaS and/or cloud computing, including both open source and proprietary technologies.
• Ability to architect, manage, and implement scalable, high-performance infrastructure to support sophisticated enterprise systems.
• Requires interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at all levels in the organization.
• Must be self-motivated, work independently or as part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate advanced problem solving and analytical skills.
• Top level knowledge of network protocols and how they are used on a large (campus-wide or beyond) network.
• Top level knowledge of data storage, processing, analysis, and visualization technologies and how they are used in administrative and/or academic endeavors at a large institution.
• Knowledge and/or experience in web applications, web programming language and object oriented programming concepts.
• Ability to determine project strategy and scope, lead business system analysis and designs, and develop realistic estimates and quotations for IT services.
• Ability to work in dynamic environment with competing priorities, a team player comfortable with working across other groups and collaborating with customers, stakeholders, technologists, and management.
• High commitment to excellence, collaboration, team achievement, and good communication.
• Ability to solve complex problems with innovative and elegant designs and deliver robust functionality on time.
Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge of campus-wide processes and procedures (preferred).
