The incumbent will perform the following:

* Receives and analyzes complex samples, modifies existing methods where no accepted methods are prescribed, provides appropriate interpretations of findings, and validates altered methods.

* Creates and maintains quality control and quality assurance for samples and data. Interprets and evaluates the results of analyses to determine validity and scientific significance.

* Analyzes and identifies controlled substances in exhibits submitted by Federal and state/local law enforcement officers, utilizing a full range of modern analytical techniques, which may contain only trace quantities of suspected drugs.

* Develops analytical and testing methods, searching pertinent literature and references; studying the chemistry of the substances; evaluating possible approaches and methods to use; devising, modifying and performing the analytical analyses; evaluating and interpreting the data; making modifications; and writing reports that describe the method and its uses and limitations devising, modifying and performing the analytical analyses.

* Develops unique and imaginative solutions to compliance problems or issues in a chemistry field, making recommendations that include consideration of alternative options; the corrective impact on the public, the environment, or the industry; and/or the probability of a conviction.

* Testifies in Federal and state courts as an "expert witness"; presents technical testimony in layman's terms; defines analytical methods and results against rigorous cross examination by defense attorneys.

**Physical Demands:** Work requires considerable physical exertion such as: lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds, prolonged standing, bending and reaching.

**Work Environment:** Work environment involves moderate/increased risks and discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of places such as laboratories, warehouses and secure office spaces. The work area is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. Some of the evidence encountered during the normal execution of duties are noxious, toxic, bio-hazardous, or pose a threat of skin puncture or laceration. Safety precautions are required such as use of fume hoods when working with acids or volatile solvents and evidence. Requires use of protective clothing or gear such as laboratory coat, safety glasses/goggles, face shield and plastic gloves.

**Basic Requirements**

Applicants must have a degree in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics **OR**

a combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

**In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as shown below:**

**FACTOR: Minimum Qualifications**

**GS-11:** one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 Federal grade level in conducting chemical analyses of drug substances and samples, calibrating and operating analytical instrumentation, such as the gas chromatograph, mass spectrometer, and liquid chromatograph, with computerized equipment, etc; and writing reports of findings of evidence;** **** OR**

3years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D.degree _or_ Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree **OR**

a combination of education and experience with course work equivalent to the major as shown above.

**GS-12:** one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 Federal grade level in determining a proper approach to chemically analyzing specified substances and samples based on literature research, methodology manuals and/or personal experiences; performing a full range of chemical analyses and physical tests on a variety of unknown substances for identification utilizing modern analytical techniques, instrumentation and following laboratory procedures; and generates a report which describes all the tests performed, calculations and conclusions.

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)/Competencies:** Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.

2. Ability to prepare written technical reports and findings.

3. Knowledge of the principles, theories, concepts, methods, and techniques of forensic chemistry.

4. Knowledge of laboratory operations and enforcement processes.

**Conditions of Employment:**

Forensic Chemists are subject to reassignment to any location in the United States depending on the needs of the DEA. All applicants must be available for relocation throughout their career with DEA and will be required to sign a Mobility Agreement to this effect when accepting an offer of employment. The Mobility Agreement confirms your understanding and agreement to accept reassignment to any location depending on the needs of the DEA. This mandatory agreement remains in effect throughout your DEA career as a Forensic Chemist.

Newly hired Forensic Chemists must successfully complete a 16-week Forensic Chemist Training Course at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Successful completion of a one-year probationary period is required (unless already completed).
