## Position Summary
**Note:** This is a part-time benefit eligible position, four hours each afternoon, Monday through Friday.
The Middlebury College Museum of Art Preparator works collaboratively within our collections management/exhibits team. Individual is responsible, organized, detail oriented, with excellent fabrication skills, tool dexterity, and the ability to work both as a team member and independently. The Preparator reports to the Museum Designer.
## Essential Functions

**The chief responsibilities of the Preparator include:**
* Maintaining art storage areas and assisting with the proper care, handling, and housing of objects in the permanent collection.
* Moving, packing, crating and occasionally transporting art
* Assisting in exhibition installation, de-installation, and packing in coordination with the collections management/ exhibits team.
* Maintaining all public art CAPP works including cleaning, waxing, and repairing works and maintaining their sites; maintaining gallery lighting and lighting inventories.
* Installing graphics and labels.
* Assisting in preparing exhibits furniture, including some precise detail painting.
* Organizing and maintaining shop and fabrication areas, including power tools and related equipment and inventories.
* Assisting the Registrar with the condition reporting and collection photography.
* Assisting the Registrar with shipping and receiving art.
## Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Requires good technical dexterity and and an extreme eye for detail and craftsmanship.
* Requires skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools and in the use and application of various materials
* Must be able to physically handle delicate and valuable art works with extreme care.
must be aware of standard good practices and methods used in painting and fine carpentry
* Good verbal and written communication skills.
* Computer literate and able to input into a database.
* Valid driver’s license.
* Some metal fabrication skills preferred
* Hinging and matting of works on paper a plus
## Experience
* 2-5 years museum work experience in the technical aspects of museum-standard art handling practices, storage, installation, and packing preferred.
* Alternative to museum experience must include proof of technical craftsmanship, understanding of fine art aesthetics, being a team player, and a strong sense of personal responsibility to a task or assignment.
## Physical Demands
* Ability to lift and move objects weighing 80 pounds.
* Must be willing to work on high ladders and mechanical lifts.
