Very exciting opportunity for a senior mobile/web technologist to help build highly scalable, globally-deployed, next generation learning application user experiences that service the need of Pearson’s millions of students and instructors.
Pearson has been recognized as the market leader in online learning in North America. We are now embarked on initiatives to take that leadership worldwide. This position will be responsible for building a highly secure and scalable platform upon which we will base the authentication and authorization for all Pearson digital products and learners. These learning products are connected, course-aware, mobile ready, with compelling UI/UX, and data rich on top of an API platform built using primarily open source technologies. He/she will partner with the UX design team, product management, development, other architecture groups, business leaders and customers to deliver products composed of integrated software and content that deliver efficacy in learning to our students and instructors

Contributes significantly to a mobile-first user experience vision and strategy for a global internet platform. “Owns” the technology behind the user experience in production. Communicates and ensures consistent execution of defined architecture practices and alignment with technology and product strategy in ensuring delivery of high quality and highly stable Learning Applications. This position requires a self-starter with the ability to lead and influence others across engineering teams, across business units, and at the executive level. Managing a small team may also be required.
Responsibilities
This position reports to the VP of Architecture for Higher Ed Product Technology, with a dotted-line report to the VP User Experience Framework, and will be responsible for:
* Acting as an advisor to the business globally and driving sound technology strategies and choices in support of building unified user experience across a diverse and global portfolio of web and mobile properties, working in partnership with the User Experience group.
* Acting as an advisor to the content teams in devising content strategies for display and integration of diverse content types across native mobile and web experiences including rich, interactive content widgets.
* Acting as subject matter expert in product design; creating architecture and design artifacts. Can articulate and drive product vision in partnership with stakeholders and in alignment with business needs and technology strategy
* Working as a trusted advisor to product management, engineering, marketing, technology, and user experience leadership, working collaboratively and proactively to support product delivery; anticipating and solving problems before blocking issues arise for product delivery teams.
* Being transparent to the entire organization on technical strategy, design decisions, and architecture risk assessment across a diverse set of learning applications
* Working cross-functionally with other chief architects and architecture teams across Higher Education and Pearson to ensure product architectures conform to the core technology strategy, including technology selection, use of common platform infrastructure, cloud capabilities, consistency in architecture approaches, security, and global availability of product and platform services.
* Constantly be learning about customers and market needs, business and product strategies, meeting with customers, and supporting the business in M&A activities
* Ensuring designs meet business objectives around data, efficacy, identity, and better understanding of our learners
* This position may require travel up to 15%, depending on location

Recommended KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
* A degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering or equivalent experience
* 10+ years software architecture experience, preferably in consumer-facing internet-scale technology products.
* 5+ years technology leadership experience
* 5+ years experience with iOS, Android and other mobile operating systems
* 5+ years experience front-end web development
* Detailed architectural driven mindset; Experience helping companies build strong user experience strategies across complex portfolios globally.
* Experience with iOS and Android UI guidelines, experience with offline user experience capabilities and offline mobile storage strategies, experience with mobile notification technologies and frameworks, experience with building experiences that span mobile and web
* Experience developing mobile-ready, responsive design HTML5 based applications including rich internet applications and single web page applications using RESTful services, JSON, CORS, WebSockets. Up to date knowledge of desktop and mobile browser capabilities
* Strong command of available open source technologies such as AngularJS, Bootstrap, Backbone.js, LESS, Saas, etc.
* Strong knowledge of front-end web application security
* Experience in designing highly scalable production deployments employing load balancers at a global scale, with a strong knowledge of HTTP 1.1/(2.0), DNS, proxies, caching technologies and other Layer 7 technologies.
* Knowledge of cross platform/ browser compatibility issues for dynamic web applications
* Experiences as a team lead or manager of a team
* Familiarity with the accessibility requirements and constraints across multiple platforms and device form factors (web, mobile, tablet, etc.)
* Experience with iOS Enterprise release strategies, In-App Purchase, Apple Push Notifications. Experience with mobile analytics.
* Published commits on an internet open source project
* Knowledge of Amazon Web Services / Google App Engine
* Experience with service aggregation / content caching to reduce chattiness / latency
* Demonstrated experience with mashup development or web components
* Experience with browser push technologies
* Experience with API and Framework optimization for mobile. Expertise in cross-domain issues with composing an application from multiple services
