MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

One year of experience as a phlebotomist, EKG/ECG technician, pulmonary technician, respiratory care technician; or in the care, preparation or handling of laboratory animals or laboratory specimens; or in the preparation and handling of cadavers.

SUBSTITUTIONS:
College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty are in any one or a combination of these specialized fields: laboratory animal technology, laboratory animal science, animal science, biology, microbiology, chemistry, nursing, zoology, agricultural sciences, physics, bacteriology, histological techniques, medical technology, immunology, urology or renewable resources.

Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science will substitute for all of the required experience.

An associate degree in nursing will substitute for all of the required experience.

Any college hours or degree must be from a school accredited by one of the following regional accrediting bodies: the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; the New England Association of Schools and Colleges; the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools; the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

There is a Special Entrance Rate for this title of $12.08 per hour.

Assists with the centrifugation of blood specimens to obtain serum or plasma as required for laboratory analysis utilizing appropriate balancing techniques.

Assists with the preparation and/or staining of slides for microscopic review.

Transports specimens to appropriate testing or storage areas.

Performs routine capillary and/or venipuncture.

Performs routine blood pathogen screening.

IN A MORGUE

Assists in preparation, embalming, and cremation of human cadavers and anatomical materials.

Maintains logs and files of cadavers and specimens received and distributed.

Collects, maintains, stores and distributes specimens.

Ensures that morgue, laboratory space and crematory are cleaned, sterilized, and have adequate instruments and supplies.

Prepares and maintains the use of anatomical materials suitable for teaching and research needs as instructed.

Assumes responsibility for the operation of the morgue, laboratory and/or crematory in the Supervisor’s absence.

IN AN ANIMAL LABORATORY

Observes individual animals in a large population, noting changes in their appearance and habits, and reports in proper form their health status.

Assists in operating animal breeding programs, selecting, and sexing animals.

Cleans cages, runs, and stalls.

Provides basic nursing assistance to animals.
