*Legal Intake Manager***

The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania (ACLU-PA) seeks a dynamic individual to join the Legal Department staff, in the Philadelphia office, as Legal Intake Manager. The ACLU-PA is an affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization founded in 1920 dedicated to defending and promoting peoples’ civil rights and civil liberties. The Pennsylvania affiliate has three offices: Our main office is in Philadelphia, and the two others are located in Harrisburg and Pittsburgh.

Our 19 staff members, along with hundreds of volunteers, work daily to achieve our mission using litigation, lobbying, and public education on a broad range of constitutional issues, including racial justice, free speech, religious freedom, reproductive rights, police misconduct, immigrants’ rights, LGBT rights, and voting rights. **Position Overview**

Under the supervision of the Legal Director, the Legal Intake Manager coordinates the ACLU-PA’s intake and referral service statewide. The Legal Intake Manager will supervise a Pittsburgh-based Legal Intake Coordinator, and together they will be responsible for hiring, training, and supervising intake volunteers and interns; providing administrative support for the legal department and staff attorneys; and assisting the Legal Department in researching and developing potential cases and advocacy campaigns. This position is full-time.

**Job Responsibilities**

* Recruit, train, and supervise interns and volunteers for the Philadelphia office to review and respond to requests for legal assistance in order to identify complaints appropriate for ACLU-PA intervention.
* Supervise Pittsburgh-based Legal Intake Coordinator.
* Organize training opportunities to keep volunteers abreast of civil liberties issues and ACLU-PA policies.
* Manage and oversee database and other systems used by the ACLU-PA to provide information, referrals, and assistance to people whose requests are not within the scope of our mission.
* Investigate selected civil liberties complaints: help develop facts and perform some basic research. Draft background memos and letters to complainants. Provide information and support to ACLU-PA clients. Complete other special projects for the Legal Department as needed.
* Provide administrative support to the Legal Department, including database and file maintenance. Ensure that the intake records are accurate, up-to-date, and well organized.
* Meet regularly with Legal Department staff to discuss intake, potential cases, and other Legal Department needs.

**Qualifications**

* Commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU-PA.
* B.A. degree, paralegal certificate, or equivalent experience. While individuals with law degrees are encouraged to apply, this is not a staff attorney position and will not advance into a staff attorney position.
* Exceptional organizational skills and a system-oriented working style are essential to maintain legal department records, manage a large group of volunteers, and handle and prioritize multiple activities and responsibilities.
* Strong supervisory skills are necessary for recruiting, training, and overseeing volunteers, and setting standards for high performance.
* Proven ability to work well with people with a wide range of interests, skills and concerns. Respect for others and sensitivity to the needs and legal issues affecting people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
* Creativity, problem-solving skills, initiative, and a self-starting attitude are necessary to identify areas for improvement and initiate improvements in department practices.
* Flexibility and willingness to learn.
* Experience in interviewing, gathering facts, and analyzing information.
* Excellent writing skills for summarizing civil liberties complaints and composing correspondence to civil liberties complainants and government agencies.
* Demonstrated ability to coordinate numerous concurrent projects and work under deadlines. Ability to manage a high volume workload and adapt quickly to changing organizational priorities.
* Computer proficiency, including database software and Internet research skills.
* Must have flexibility to work beyond the regular work week as needed.
* Spanish fluency is a plus.
