Here’s a delightful cd/dvd of famed bassist Ron Carter demonstrating his other skill, that of a composer. Arranged by Rich DeRosa, these 10 pieces (eight on the dvd) are performed by Carter and the famed WDR Band, which includes an impressive group including John Marshall/tp-fh, and Johan Horlen/as. The more familiar Carter pieces such as “Little Waltz” and “Blues For DP” have their subtle shades brought out by the rich harmonies, and Horlen’s alto with Marshall’s horn adds to the charm. Carter himself shows his deft touch as he is featured on “For Toddlers Only” and the richly hued “Doom Mood” whiel guitarist Paul Shigihara gets some impressive solo space on “Sheila’s Song” and “Wait For the Deep.” Reeds and brass have a hint of Gil Evans’ influence, keeping the colors warm as opposed to hot or icy. Sophisticated and charming outing, just like the lanky composer.
