Using a trifecta of lasers, light guide technology and expert know-how, the Jaguar design team at the Somerset House of London's 2016 LDN Design Biennale silhouetted a performance-celebrating futuristic vehicle, complete with accompanying video of defining moments past and present in the brand's history like its 1988 motor racing victory at Le Mans, and with the panache of a veritable art installation.
Taking captivated viewers through rooms speckled with laser-powered light guides, Jaguar's team created the distinctive virtual image of the automaker's iconic E-Type, only to have it transform, to stunned audiences, into today’s family sports car iteration, the F-PACE. This curio gives over to a "gallery of the future,'" wherein light guides trace a path through a design world rapidly self-revolutionizing, replete with highlights of the challenges designers face, from driver health and wellbeing to new powertrain tech and interior cabin needs, to the future human-machine relationship and autonomous driving technology.
And the piece de resistance: a three-dimensional laser-and-light-guide sculpture-vision of the vehicle of the future, giving the impression of a floating, transcendent machine, created by Jaguar Creative Specialist Hugo Nightingale and the Imagination creative agency, hinting at potential ultimate answers to these looming questions. Interpretation, as with the greatest art pieces, is left to the viewer and the critic.
Which asks us to answer our own question: what does the future hold for Jaguar and a new year of travels? Only time, and a test drive, may tell.
