The software giant Microsoft has recently launched its Office 365 personal edition at a price tag of INR 330 a month and also aims to gain a chunk of 25 million new Indian consumers via its devices and services in the next 12 months.

But having said that there are hardly any Microsoft smart devices in the market, apart from smart phones of Nokia which has lost its market domination long ago, the goal appears to be a daunting task for the company in the given timeframe.

‘’The Microsoft windows platform for smart devices in India comprises of just 5 percent of the smart-phone operating system market in the country which is similar to the market share of Nokia phones. And it will be challenging for Microsoft to add 25 million new customers in the Android dominated country,’’ says Tarun Pathak, Telecom Analyst at CyberMedia Research.

At present Android holds more than 90 percent share in the mobile operating system space in India, according to research firm IDC, with Android powered phones starting from just INR 3,000

So will Microsoft be able to convince an Android smart-phone user to switch to a not so famous  operating system?

‘’The bulk of applications which are there on Android platform can’t be availed on windows based smart-phone and Microsoft will actually have to come up with something outstanding to compel me to switch over to a windows based mobile operating system,’’ says Youmit, a smart phone enthusiast.

The company’s initiative to make the Office 365 Personal compatible with the ‘i’ devices also seems to be coming a bit too late since Apple’s huge App store already has abundant basic office tools, so paying an additional amount of INR 330 for Office 365 Personal which is valid only for one computer, one smart-phone and one tablet appears irrational for an Apple fan.

The biggest challenge for Microsoft however will be to propel the growth of its mapping application Bing, which will be embedded in its Nokia smart phones, believes industry experts.

‘’Its a poor choice for Microsoft to come up with a mapping application in the market which is dominated by Google maps since we  have already seen the fate of Apple Maps,’’ says Sanchit Vir Gogia, Founder and CEO, Greyhound Knowledge Group.

Agreeing to that Pathak adds that it will take a long time for Bing to compete with the continuously updated Google Maps software.

Apart from Microsoft’s online store, the office 365 personal edition will also be available at all leading stores including Chroma, Reliance Digital and Jumbo Electronics.
