Northwest AHEC – March 21, 2015 – The Northwest Area Health Education Center (AHEC), a program of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and part of the North Carolina AHEC System, together with the North Carolina Health Information and Communications Alliance (NCHICA) and Quintiles Transnational Corporation, is pleased to announce the inaugural NCHICA eHealth Transformation Challenge. The interactive public health Hackathon competition will take place April 11 and 12 at Quintiles’ headquarters in the Research Triangle Park in Durham.

During the two-day event, multidisciplinary teams of students and health care professionals will compete to design and pitch a technology-based solution to enhance the care of elderly with dementia in North Carolina and improve quality of life for their caregivers.

Each team will select one of six designated categories of futuristic care coordination and propose a concept that streamlines caring for elderly patients with dementia. Teams will be judged on their concept, potential impact, viable business strategy and uniqueness, with the winning team to receive a $3,000 prize.

“Caring for the elderly with dementia can involve emotional challenges and physical barriers that are difficult to overcome,” said Chris Jones, assistant director of quality & informatics at Northwest AHEC. “We’re excited to bring together North Carolina’s bright minds to explore innovative technological solutions, so that we can better coordinate health care resources and community services for caregivers. Our ultimate goal is to transform these ideas into real solutions that will improve how we care for these patients in our state.”

Students, entrepreneurs, clinicians, programmers, caregiver advocates and others interested in developing public health solutions are invited to participate. Registration includes breakfast, lunch, snacks and other surprises. There will be food trucks and photo booths on site. Event registration and fee information can be found at: http://nwahec.org/etc. Students with a valid active student ID from a North Carolina University may register for a discounted rate, and all participants must register for the event by Midnight EDT April 10, 2015.
