Fifth generation Wi-Fi, or IEEE 802.11ac, is getting hot. At last month’s Interop Las Vegas, Cisco announced 802.11ac access point (AP) modules. And at this week’s CTIA show (also in Las Vegas), Aruba and Ubiquity announced 802.11ac APs and other wLAN ‘goodies,’ like improved AP selection for AP ‘sticky’ client devices, with more announcements expected. Wireless LAN vendors are betting BYOD will drive a new upgrade cycle, but hedging their bets with new features and capabilities to tease out tight enterprise IT budget dollars.
