MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, (PIA) — The initial transition for fourth year or grade 10 students to be listed under the new curriculum for an additional two years in high school has been postponed to November 9 to 13.
This was announced by Gertrudes Mabotin, the Senior High School (SHS) Coordinator of the Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Office, at the well-attended K to 12 Caravan cum Forum organized by the City Schools Division at the city gym Friday.
The early registration for SHS enrollees was formerly scheduled to be held this week, Oct. 19-23, according to Lina Gayas and Allan Rosello, DepEd Southern Leyte Division SHS Coordinators, during a dySL Kapihan sa PIA interaction on October 9.
As this developed, both the City and Provincial DepEd offices professed readiness to welcome and implement the step-up education system which would take effect in full swing for the opening of classes by June 2016 or the school year 2016-2017.
At the DepEd provincial office, 20 out of 40 National High Schools had positioned to offer various tracks and strands, or courses and subjects, to meet the demands of the two more years of schooling, and at least seven out of 16 private high schools had permits to open SHS.
For the City Division, seven National High Schools will cater to various tracks and virtually all private high schools had announced its doors open for the challenging new curricula.
Mariza Magan, the new City Schools Division Superintendent who replaced Manuel Albano about two months ago, was grateful for the warm support shown by all education stakedholders during the K to 12 caravan-forum.
City Mayor Maloney Samaco, an educator by vocation, said more explanation and enlightenment is needed to parents who viewed the new system as an additional expense, and to those who still harbor lingering doubts, adding that just like other newly-introduced programs there will always be some kind of birth pains in the implementation process.
The early registration is meant to determine, among other factors, the number of students aiming to take the various academic, technical, or vocational subjects so the government can be ready with specific budgets.
Through a voucher system, it was learned that the government intends to foot the bill for students wishing to enroll in courses offered by private or non-DepEd schools at P 17,500.00 per individual for tuition costs covering the two successive years,. (mmp, PIA8, Southern Leyte)
