ISTANBUL’74 presents the fifth edition of the Istanbul International Arts and Culture Festival (IST. Festival) in association with W Magazine from May 22 – May 24, 2015.

With a new take for 2015 with the theme of “Dialogues on Realism in Arts & Culture”, the IST. Festival examines the question of reality and how this has an influence on the visual aesthetics and content regarding literature, film, music, arts, fashion and design as well as the audience’s perceptions. The festival also explores the evolvement of technology and its effect on capturing realism in the Arts and Culture.

12:00 DANIEL ARSHAM, JULIETTE LEWIS moderated by SVEN SCHUMANN – The Realism of Tomorrow Screening of Daniel Arsham’s “Future Relic 03” staring Juliette Lewis, based on the notion of how todays realism will effect, be perceived and preserved in the future. Artist Daniel Arsham and actress/singer Juliette Lewis moderated by writer Sven Schumann will discuss the film and their artistic collaboration.

13:00 ZULFU LIVANELI moderated by BARBAROS ALTUGAn intimate conversation with legendary Turkish author, poet, musician filmmaker and politician Zulfu Livaneli with Turkish writer Barbaros Altug. Zulfu Livaneli’s work has successfully reflected the Turkish society and politics in a realistic way, which is referred by many as the unofficial, yet accurate history of Turkey from the 80’s till today.

14:00 HARVEY KEITEL moderated by ALPHAN ESELIA panel discussion with legendary method actor Harvey Keitel moderated by filmmaker and IST. Festival co-founder Alphan Eseli, featuring an in depth look at Mr. Keitel’s career as well as the methods of achieving a realistic performance as an actor in film. The role of extensive research to understand the experiences of characters portrayed. The boundaries of realism in acting. The physical and mental limitations of an actor.

15:00 CRAIG MCDEAN, EDWARD ENNINFUL moderated by ARMAND LIMNANDERA conversation between photographer, Craig McDean and frequent collaborator fashion stylist, Edward Enninful moderated by deputy editor of W magazine, Armand Limnander on the depiction of real life in a striking manner, creating together a signature hyper-realistic approach in the world of photography and fashion.

16:00 GIAMBATTISTA VALLI moderated by GIANLUCA LONGOA discussion with world-renowned designer, Giambattista Valli moderated by fashion editor and stylist Gianluca Longo, on the reality that ties the past to the contemporary world of today. What is the remaining reality of Haute Couture?

17:00 Screening of ‘LES BOSQUETS’JR’s latest movie inspired by his Portrait of a Generation and ballet projects, on a music by Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams and Woodkid. Followed by a Q&A with artist JR.

13:30 TREVOR PAGLEN Artist, geographer and author Trevor Paglen will discuss his work on attempting to “see”, “explore” & “document” the hidden worlds. Paglen’s discussion will also feature his latest output, Academy Award winning documentary Citizen Four.

His daughter Lona returns to his laboratory— abandoned after he went missing. Lona continues her deceased dad’s work, and speaks to a remaining statue of him in an effort to find guidance. ‘Les Bosquets’Art and social uproar interweave in this film based on the ballet Les Bosquets of New York City Ballet, inspired by the 2005 French suburb riots. A continuation of JR’s Portrait of a Generation, it recalls his experience in the ghetto of Montfermeil using various means of expression and narration: video archives, choreography, and testimony. Directed, written, produced by JR.
‘Faces in the Crowd’Shot on a Los Angeles soundstage in early 2013 by Alex Prager whom directed hundreds of actors on constructed sets to create portraits of large crowds at airport terminals, lobbies, beaches, movie theatres and other public spaces. For each scene, Prager taps into a shared cultural memory to create images that are familiar yet strange.
‘Colony’A film about psychogeography, the memory of the panorama, trauma and remembrance. These are the remains of the memory of people who have been searching their loved ones, houses, among political uncertainty. This film, is exactly the struggle to capture this soul. Directed and written by Gürcan Keltek, produced by Aziz Mullaaziz.
