Family of student killed in car accident donates $13,000 to Gillian’s Place
A Thanksgiving visit ended in tragedy for the Merani family last year when a car accident claimed the life of Arif Merani as he left Niagara on his way back to Carleton University.
In just a few weeks time, on Nov. 13, 2013, Arif would have turned 23.
“And now we’ve raised $13,000,” said Arif’s mother, Nazlin. “I feel like the number three has quite a spiritual significance for us.”
The money was collected following a host of fundraising endeavours around Niagara, together with some fundraisers that were held by students back in Ottawa. When it came time to select a charity, Nazlin said the choice was easy.

The funds will go towards another organization that was close to Arif’s heart: the Aga Khan Foundation of Canada.
