The latest visitor statistics show the number of people coming to Guernsey is dropping.

Overall the number of visitors is down by around 7,000 – if you include cruise passengers and visiting yachtsmen, which have both increased during the last six months.

However, if you take those two sectors away the number of visitors to Guernsey would have been down 12,500 on a year ago.

10,000 fewer people travelled to the island by ferry in the first half of this year compared to the first six months of 2015. There has also been a drop of more than 2,300 travelling by plane.

The largest fall by nationality was among UK visitors coming to the island – which is down nearly 7,000 year on year.

Visit Guernsey says a tough May is partly to blame for the latest statistics, along with uncertainty following the UK’s vote to leave the European Union.

Mike Hopkins, Director of Marketing and Tourism said,

“Overall visitor numbers to May have been very disappointing, with the month of May being particularly tough for everyone; the decline in the number of visitors departing by sea, having made the biggest impact. It is encouraging to see, however, a stronger end to the half, with June showing an overall increase in visitors, and amongst visitors from the UK.”
