Irish stars Colin Farrell, Ruth Negga and Catriona Balfe have been honored with a nomination for the Golden Globe Awards, with John Carney’s movie Sing Street up for the Best Movie award next January. These annual awards, now heading into their 75th year, are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press and are considered a good indicator of Oscar success.
Colin Farrell is nominated for the Best Actor gong in the Comedy or Musical category for his role in the surreal dark comedy The Lobster, which was filmed in Ireland. This is Farrell’s second Golden Globe nomination having previously received the nod for the same award in 2009 for his part in In Bruges. Ed Guiney, from Element Pictures congratulated Farrell on the nomination saying it was “so richly deserved.”
Farrell will compete for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category alongside Ryan Gosling for La La Land, Hugh Grant for Florence Foster Jenkins, Jonah Hill for War Dogs and Ryan Reynolds for Deadpool.
Ruth Negga has already being tipped for Oscar success for her role in the movie Loving and this nomination, for Best Film Drama Actress, could up her chances. Both Negga and her Australian co-star, Joel Edgerton, are nominated for their roles. The movie, Loving, tells the true story of an illegal inter-racial marriage in the US state of Virginia in the 1950s. The movie itself has also been shortlisted for the Best Film (Drama) Award.
Negga is up against Amy Adams for Arrival, Jessica Chastain for Miss Sloane, Isabelle Huppert for Elle and Natalie Portman for Jackie.
Monaghan actress Caitriona Balfe has been nominated for Best Actress for a TV Drama for the second year in a row for her performance in Outlander. Her nomination for this role has been getting a lot of press coverage as actress Anna Kendrick mispronounced her name when reading the nominations. Poor auld “Caitriona Bofly.”
She’s up against The Crown's Claire Foy, Evan Rachel Wood for Westworld, Winona Ryder for Stranger Things, and Keri Russell for The Americans.
John Carney’s Dublin-based feel-good movie Sing Street has been nominated for Best Movie in the Comedy or Musical section. The 1980s set filmed stars Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Lucy Boynton, Jack Reynor, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Aidan Gillen. It follows the tale of Conor, a pupil at a private school who is forced to relocate to a tough inner city public school when the recession hits his family.

Another Irish links to the stellar lineup of nominees include a nod to Donegal-loving Sarah Jessica Parker for her role in the HBO comedy drama, Divorce. The hit show is the brain child of County Meath comedian Sharon Horgan.
This year’s show will be hosted by presenter Jimmy Fallon on Jan 8 2017.
