Peter Bailey

The Ireland Branch is pleased to announce details of their Spring Lecture, which will be given by Peter Bailey, chairman of Families in British India Society and author of Researching Ancestors in the East India Company Armies.

His topic will be “The Irish in India”.  As members may be aware, some reports suggest that up 50% of all British people in India were Irish in the early 19th century.  Both the British Army and that of the East India Company would have a large proportion of Irish men.  Because many of the Irish in India were there in some form of official capacity, records of them can contain a wealth of information.

The IGRS is also one of the sponsors of the first-ever FIBIS conference in May (16th – 18th May 2014 at The Best Western Plus Manor Hotel, near Birmingham).  Programme details for the conference can be found here.

Date: Wednesday 19th March 2014 at 19:00
Venue: Helen Roe Theatre, Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, 63 Merrion Square South, Dublin 2

Please note that this is a new venue for the IGRS.
