The latest developments in gaming such as virtual reality and eSports require powerful hardware. Intel will showcase this and much more at gamescom.

Gamers’ pulses will soon be racing once again in Cologne: From August 17 to 21, gamescom will be opening its doors for the eighth time at the city’s international trade fair and exhibition center. This year, the world’s largest event for video and computer games will enter a new dimension in a whole host of ways. With over 800 exhibitors from around 50 countries and some 345,000 visitors expected, all the previous records look set to be broken.

With the very latest game releases, action-packed competitions and innovative hardware, gamescom 2016 is predicted to blow the current limits of digital entertainment wide open. The tagline of this year’s event is “Heroes in New Dimensions”, and particular focus will be given to the topic of virtual reality (VR). “VR has enabled games technology to be launched onto the market, and this is now bringing about a lasting change across the entire entertainment industry,” says Dr. Maximilian Schenk, Managing Director at the German Video Games Association. However, this new trend also requires increasingly complex processor technology, designed to quickly handle large data volumes and processes. Intel is reaching new heights, in this respect, year after year, and is not only exhibiting its latest CPU technology at this year’s gamescom — it is also bringing with it the most up-to-date gaming setups, impressive showcases and attractive promotions.

gamescom presents the future of digital entertainment

For professional eSports competitors—as well as any casual gamers who have always wanted the opportunity to test out professional equipment—the Intel stand (hall 9.1, stand B05) is equipped with a large number of high-end desktop computers, gaming laptops and high-spec rigs. These include the Acer Predator 17 X and the MIFcom Battlebox with an overclocked Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition processor. The sixth-generation Intel Core i7 CPUs and setups based on Intel PCIe SSDs currently offer the very highest levels of performance, especially for demanding 4K gaming or data-intensive workloads.

The same applies to the still relatively new trend of virtual reality gaming, which is now quickly gathering pace. With this in mind, a real highlight of the Intel demo area will be the two VR racing simulation rigs from Vesaro. Each racing simulator is equipped with an HTC Vive VR headset plus surround sound, and the rigs enable gamers to immerse their senses in the high-octane world of the Project Cars racing games. In conjunction with the Intel Core i7 processors—which make the most in-depth VR experiences a reality—GeForce GTX Titan X graphics cards from NVIDIA are used to provide the finest visuals possible.

The Intel Blogging Lounge: An influential meeting place

The Intel Blogging Lounge has virtually become a fixture of the Intel exhibition stand at gamescom, and in previous years at both the IFA and CeBIT, it has been a meeting place for influential figures from the tech scene. But the lounge—which features a catering and relaxation area—is not just a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the exhibition halls. It also offers broadband Internet connection and the very latest hardware, giving vloggers, Tweeters and YouTubers the chance to publish up-to-date content from the exhibition in real time, by taking advantage of the enormous computing power available.

For this year’s gamescom, the Blogging Lounge will be specially fitted with two “Intel render beasts.” Thanks to their extremely high level of graphics performance, these PCs can be used to render 2D and 3D video content at incredibly high speeds — a feature that will come in handy for any users who live-stream games to their fans via Twitch. This popular video portal has now become one of the most important streaming platforms on the eSports scene, and forms the basis of a special gamescom partnership between Intel and famous Let’s Players ZanderLP from Germany, Aiekillu France and LTZonda England.

An exciting treasure hunt for gaming fans

The Intel #TreasureHunt is perfect for anyone who thinks their home setup urgently needs an upgrade after taking a test drive on one of the demo devices. That’s because five ASUS ROG GL752 gaming laptops with sixth-generation Intel Core i7 processors, five Intel Core i7-6700K CPUs and five Intel 750 PCIe SSDs with a capacity of 1.2 terabytes, are up for grabs as part of an exhibition-wide scavenger hunt. For a chance to win one of these 15 top prizes, participants must embark on a treasure hunt by visiting the stands run by Intel and seven other partners.

The aim is to collect a sticker from each stand and stick them to a special Intel badge. Anyone who manages to hand their badge in at the Intel stand by 5 p.m. will be entered into the prize draw. At 5.30 p.m. on each of the five exhibition days, three of the top prizes will be given out. Anyone not lucky enough to get their hands on one will still be in with a chance to win a limited number of Intel merchandise products, including hoodies and T-shirts. We wish every participant the very best of luck and we hope that everyone has a gamescom 2016 packed full of gaming fun and excitement!
