NGO Ipoh City Watch (ICW) recently launched their KOHIJAU-ICycle Recycling System at their Gotong Royong held at Desa Tambun Indah, Tambun amidst a host of activities that included painting a bridge, clearing sidewalks and cleaning their neighborhood.

Under the system residents will earn Recycle points which can be exchanged with cash or products similar to the Bonus Link system.
Hulu Kinta Assemblyman Datuk Aminuddin Md Hanafiah officially launched the system and was joined by Zone 4 (Perpaduan / Ulu Kinta / Tambun ) Ipoh Councillor, Mazlan Abd Rahman, ICW President, Assoc Professor Dr Richard Ng together with NGO PATSE* and over 200 residents in the early morning event.
*NGO PATSE or Perak Action Team for a Sustainable Environment, is made up of members from ICW, KOHIJAU, Perak SW Corp, Lions Club of Perak Silver State, Malaysia Plastics Manufacturers Association of Perak and RT Jelapang.

In his address Aminuddin thanked ICW for introducing the System and described it as a positive long term development to encourage residents to carry out recycling activities effectively.
Councillor Mazlan similarly praised the system which allowed resident to exchange their recyclables for points that can be exchanged for products.
To participate in the program residents have to register with ICycle to receive an account number and barcode stickers. Currently there is no membership fee to register with ICycle.
Residents will pack their recyclables in plastic bags, place their barcode sticker on the bag and dispose the bag at the ICycle recycle bin.
ICycle will collect the recyclables and credit the points to their personal account which can be checked online.
ICW President and KOHIJAU Chairman Dr Richard Ng said the goal of the gotong royong besides the System launch was to create awareness among residents to keep their neighborhoods clean.
Unlike most gotong royong ICW’s event saw a good turnout of local residents working together with Council workers to clean up the neighborhood.
Additionally the residents went beyond the borders of their neighborhood and participated to paint a rusty bridge and clear the overgrown sidewalk along the main road at Jalan Perajurit.

Certainly a commendable effort in line with ICW’s motto of “Our City Our Responsibility” where even Lions Clubs International District Governor, Jennifer Kim drove down from Penang to support Lions Club of Perak Silver State who sent a strong team to participate.
