As we are getting close to Q4 of 2016, I am once again recapping anything and everything that took place in the Internet of Things world. As always, our company strives to provide you with the most up-to-date information 100% focused on IoT.

The latest in IoT news:

Guest Contribution: A new industry report from Parks Associates reveals 51% of U.S. broadband households find an IoT device that alerts them to smoke and fire highly appealing and 41% find a device that alerts them to a water leak to be highly appealing.

RS Components (RS) announced in conjunction with the Raspberry Pi Foundation that the cumulative sales total for Raspberry Pi products has now reached 10 million units. In addition to being an authorised distributor, RS is one of the official manufacturers of the Raspberry Pi and, during peak production, produces just short of 1400 boards per hour with manufacturing partner Sony at their factory in the UK.

Capgemini recently released the World Quality Report 2016, published in conjunction with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), which examines the state of application quality and testing practices across multiple industries and 32 countries. The report reveals that despite 85 percent claiming that internet of things (IoT) products are a part of their business operations, over two thirds (68 percent) of organizations in which IoT plays a role do not currently have a test strategy for this specific aspect of IT.

Tekes – the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation (Tekes) and IBM announced a partnership that will enable Finland to utilize Watson cognitive computing to help doctors improve the health of its citizens, and strengthen and develop the Finnish innovation and business ecosystem in the fields of health and well-being.

Unlike other smart home systems on the market, the iDevices Smart Home Essentials kit requires no central hub, gateway or bridge.

Xively by LogMeIn, Inc. introduced the Xively ProductLauncher, an interactive design tool to help nearly anyone, even those with limited technical expertise, quickly and easily create a virtual connected product and business. Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technology with multi-mile ranges and multi-year battery lifetimes has created a growing smart city developer opportunity, according to a recently published report by global Internet of Things (IoT) research firm ON World.

Symantec’s Security Response team has discovered that cybercriminals are hijacking home networks and everyday consumer connected devices to help carry out distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on more profitable targets, usually large companies. To succeed, they need cheap bandwidth and get it by stitching together a large web of consumer devices that are easy to infect because they lack sophisticated security.

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has released several updates to its developer toolkit line-up. The latest toolkits empower developers to build faster and smarter when creating things like mobile apps and low-cost beacons, as well as gateways that control IoT sensors.
