Now officially conference foes, schools from the Frontier Conference now members of CCC

With the conference tournament coming up in about a month, the first year of the new-look Cascade Collegiate Conference has been quite intriguing with the new additions from the Frontier Conference playing a big role in the title chases. On the men's side two teams are in the top four and on the women's side three of the top four are newcomers.

In case you missed it, the CCC officially accepted teams from the smaller Frontier Conference into the fold in February as Associate Members for soccer and softball. Carroll College, Rocky Mountain College and the University of Great Falls had been competing among the unaffiliated groups in the NAIA for postseason and regular season.

After years of non-conference games - including the Red Lion Challenge held in Spokane in 2012 and 2013 - against their neighbors from the west, the trio from Montana became members of the league this season, creating a simpler and more robust conference schedule. The first official games between schools from the two conferences on September 11 marked the end of a lengthy process that began two years earlier.

"The conversations really began back in August of 2013 when the NAIA held a "West Coast Summit" to address issues NAIA schools face in the west," Cascade Conference Commissioner Robert Cashell told INWsoccernews in February. "From that a task force was developed and the legislation to allow for per-sport membership among conferences was crafted. Along with the legislation, conferences needed to to have the mechanisms in place through bylaws if they had a desire to accept associate membership applications.

"The CCC established the necessary processes last summer after the legislation passed. We received applications the end of October of 2014 and our AD's and others have been reviewing. Ultimately was up for a President's vote."

Cashell and Frontier Conference Commissioner Kent Paulson played key roles in making changes in the NAIA rules to pave the way for the changes.

"The discussions of Associate Membership for softball and soccer was a nearly three-year process," Paulson told INWsn in February. "Rob Cashell and I sponsored some initial legislation to the National Administrative Council some two-plus years ago that didn’t pass due to some legislation that was in place but it did pave the way for the legislative changes that were passed by the NAIA body at the 2014 National Convention. This legislation was co-sponsored by our conferences along with others and presented by Rob Cashell representing the CCC."

The move of the Frontier teams into the CCC could be the beginning of a wave of Affiliated Memberships throughout the NAIA, which features quite a large contingent of teams in sports outside of football and basketball that are considered unaffiliated due to a lack of teams in their home conference.

"I see this as a positive opportunity for the advancement of student-athlete’s in many conferences throughout the NAIA," Paulson said of the NAIA's rule changes. "I think that these positive arrangements will be utilized in a number of sports depending on the needs of the various conferences involved."

Though Cashell did not feel the Red Lion Challenge -- a series of non-conference soccer, basketball and volleyball games held in Spokane as a neutral location -- between the two conferences played a role in furthering the process, Paulson did feel it helped prepare for the upcoming change.

"I think it had a lot to do with shaping the foundation for our presentation of granting Associative Membership for other sports in addition to football within the NAIA. I know that it has also developed increased scheduling alliances between the FC and the CCC in other sports such as basketball and volleyball as well."

The merger came at a time when there were also several other changes for both conferences.

For the Frontier contingent, it's only the second year for the Carroll men's program and Westminster (Salt Lake City) departed for NCAA DII.

"Westminster College officially notified our league of their intention to leave the NAIA and the Frontier Conference in June of 2013," said Paulson. "Had they elected to stay, they too would have made application to be considered as part of our group seeking Associate Membership in the CCC."

Meanwhile, the membership in the CCC was already seeing some major changes. Powerhouse Concordia departed for the NCAA DII GNAC while Southern Oregon and Eastern Oregon were adding men's programs. The conference had also approved the previous summer Walla Walla University and Multnomah University as new members. WWU and MU are only fielding men's teams for soccer.

Here is a look at the season up to this point:

MEN :: NON-CONFERENCE PLAY  #############

Carroll College

The Saints opened up with a two-game visit to Utah, where they fell 2-1 to The Master's College and then a 1-0 win against former conference foe and event host Westminster, which has moved up to Division II. A penalty from Jose Porras in the 50th tied up the first contest, but TMC converted from the spot as well five minutes later for the win, and then Porras set up Chris Brayton (Bozeman, MT) two days later for the deciding goal in the 49th versus the Griffins. Conor Smith (Spokane Valley, WA) made two saves in that shutout.

When Carroll returned home, Porras played a big role in a 4-1 win against Lethbridge, scoring three goals. The first was set up by Isaac Bostrom (Helena, MT) in the eighth, and after his penalty in the 37th reclaimed the lead, Jose Mena and Nathan Boone (Whitefish, MT) combined to set up his third in the 77th. Terry Cox (Spokane, WA) found Jake Gilbertson to cap the scoring in the 85th. The non-conference slate wrapped up with a 5-0 loss at DII side MSU-Billings.

College of Idaho

The Yotes had very little prep for conference play, playing just one contest - a one-sided 8-0 victory against Sierra Nevada. Joe Bolin (Payette, ID) scored three goals and an assist in the contest and the Selimovic brothers played a large role with Admir (Boise, ID) tallying a goal and an assist and Mehmed (Boise, ID) registering a goal and three assists. Also scoring were Jorge Brambila, Brandon Smith and Tyrell Johnson.

Eastern Oregon University

Two of the brand new program's three foes in non-conference play were from the conference, but they opened things up against Sierra Nevada College in a 2-1 loss. Trailing since the first half, Robert Wilson (Boise, ID) tied things up in the 81st on a ball from Jovan Rojas (Pasco, WA), but the visitors scored the winner three minutes later. Wilson opened the scoring in their next outing, a 6-0 win against CCC newcomer Multnomah, courtesy of Aldo Rivas. Wilson went on to add an assist and Rivas a goal while Rojas netted two of his own along with another assist. Rene Gutierrez and Jesus Trejo also got on the board. In their last non-league game, the Mountaineers went 96 minutes with Alfredo Lara making 10 saves before giving up the 1-0 overtime decider.

University of Great Falls

In a back-and-forth opener, the Argos led twice against The Master's College with Anderson Cardoso getting the opener four minute in and Luis Torres scoring in the 68th on a ball from Renan Zampieri, but the visitors grabbed the win on a 94th minute corner for a 3-2 win. Facing their former conference foes in Utah, the Argos took the 1-0 win over Westminster with 12 minutes remaining when a cross from Jon-Eric Krans was put away by Jordan Byland as Henrik Sohn recorded the shutout on two saves.

The final non-league affair was against local rival Rocky Mountain, and the pair played an 11-goal overtime result in which the Argos come up short on the road. Krans and Rodrigo Souza gave the Argos a two-goal lead in the first 18 minutes before Jack Clancy answered for the Bears. The two sides exchanged goals with Christoffer Bisbo pushing the lead to two in the 56th and the Bears got one back via Matthew Thomas in the 76th. Byland made it two again in the 81st before the hosts rattled off three consecutive via Clancy, Tiago Ewald and Donovan Luce (Billings, MT) in the 83rd, 84th and 89th to go in front. The Argos denied the late win with a goal from Sam Howard with five seconds left, but the Bears grabbed the victory through Steven Forbes, who set up two earlier goals, in the 97th.

Rocky Mountain College

The Bears kicked things off with the wild 3-3 draw against local rival Great Falls (see above) before heading out to Kansas and North Dakota for a three-game sweep. They picked up a 2-1 win at Kansas Wesleyan and then a 3-1 win against Tabor College before departing Kansas. After falling behind in the first half, Luce tied it up early in the second half on a Forbes corner and less than a minute later Nolan Sherwood hit for the winner in the first contest. Sherwood then provided the opener, on a Forbes service, and the final goal in the team's win against Tabor with the winner provided on an own goal. At Jamestown, the Bears rolled to a four-goal lead before the break. An own goals started it off with Colin Gregory (Billings, MT) netting to make it two. Then Forbes set up both Ewald and Clancy to make it four.

Walla Walla University

The Wolves' lone non-conference match against hometown Whitman College was postponed and never made up before they kicked off league play.

Corban University

Dominant from the start, the Warriors were perfect in non-league play with wins over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (2-0), Trinity Western (4-0), George Fox (3-0) and Simpson University (4-0). Midfielder Nathaniel Cheney (Clarkston, WA) tallied three goals and an assist in the wins while defender James Williamson (Coeur d'Alene, ID) led the defense in all four shutout performances.

Evergreen State College

The Geoducks were 3-0-0 in non-league play, thanks in part to Tanner Williams (Sandpoint, ID), who played a role in the scoring in all three outings. He set up the final goal in a 3-1 win at Northwest Christian to open the season and then scored the opener in a 3-0 win against Doane and wrapped things up with an assist on the winner in the 2-1 victory at DIII Willamette. Connor Beck (Red Lodge, WA) also registered an assist in the opener and Crisantos Chavez (CC Spokane) scored the third goal against Doane.

Multnomah University

The Lions were drubbed 6-0 and 5-0 by EOU and Linfield before getting their first goal in an 8-1 loss to Trinity Lutheran.

Northwest Christian University

The Beacons were winless in their non-league campaign at 0-3-1.

Northwest University

The Eagles struggled in the beginning, falling in their first three non-league games before wrapping things up with a pair of victories.

Oregon Tech

The Owls split their non-conference slate with a 2-2-0 record. Among the results was a 5-1 win against Trinity Lutheran in which Casey Oltman (Ellensburg, WA) scored the first four goals of the match, three in the first half.

Southern Oregon University

In the program's first year, the Raiders kicked things off with a 4-0-0 record in which the defense allowed only two goals thanks, in part, to defender Brett Butler (Yakima, WA / CC Spokane), who also scored in the 10-1 win against Sierra Nevada.

Warner Pacific College

The Knights 2-3-0 in non-conference play with Mario Guizar (Kennewick, WA / Walla Walla CC) scoring in a 4-2 loss at Johnson & Wales in the opener.

It started off with a narrow 1-0 road win over fellow CCC program Northwest Christian in which defender Allison Jordan (Spokane, WA) set up Crystal Schuder for the winner in the 27th and helped lead a back line that allowed Jessica Parker (Boise, ID) to record the shutout on one save.
