A series of new rapid prototyping educational courses for children and teenagers have been launched, taking place in London’s first ever purpose built workspace for making and 3D printing. Delivered by Fire Tech Camp, the UK’s most progressive tech holiday camp for kids, the summer 2015 courses allow children and teenagers to learn skills that are at the forefront of modern digital fabrication and design.

The maker movement is rapidly growing in popularity in the UK largely stemming from an entrepreneurial, DIY culture which has come about post-recession. Fire Tech Camp wants kids to be involved in this movement by teaching them skills in 3D printing, laser cutting, computer aided-design (CAD) and get them physically working with vinyl, wax and silicone for a holistic digital-meets-physical learning experience.

Fire Tech Camp has relocated to FabLab London, a fabrication space in the heart of the City which works with art and technology in new and exciting ways.

Summer 2015 ‘maker camps’ taking place at FabLab London include:

Rapid Prototyping: Intro to Making and 3D Printing – a five day course, which gets kids excited about making with a blend of design, engineering and craft

Invent, design, MAKE your own (physical) game! – this two-day course teaches kids all of the steps involved in making a mini desktop game including a focus on design, development and packaging

Introduction to 3D Printing – a one day course covering the basics of 3D printing, kids will get to design and print their own mini 3D objects

Jill Hodges, Fire Tech Camp CEO and founder commented,

“At Fire Tech Camp we want children and teens to get involved in the maker movement, by building it in to their extracurricular activities. We encourage our campers to exercise their creative side while developing key skills in problem-solving, practical – rather than theoretical – intelligence and inventiveness. We’re so excited to be based at FabLab London and look forward to working and building the Camps in a collaborative and exciting environment.”

Tony Fish, co-founder of Fab Labs London added,

“At Fab Lab London we are focused on Learn, Make, Share which translates into turning ideas into a reality. The Fire Tech Camp ethos of empowering kids with the tools to get involved with the maker movement is massively exciting, aligns to our thinking and is a fantastic partner and addition to our activities.”

Further education and experience in making can ultimately lead to careers in medicine, technology, design and architecture. Fire Tech Camp’s maker camp offering includes 3D printing, laser cutting and Minecraft world building through intensive mix of creativity, gaming and engineering.
