Chris asks…

What candy bar has been around the longest?

there have been some flash in the pans, what is the ironhorse candy bar?

Justin answers:

There is no clear idea apart from the fact that places chocolate bars as first originating in the 19th century with the Granog Brothers in Canada the most likey first individually packaged bar in North America in around 1910. Evidence suggest Cadbury’s (Britsh) or possible Nestle could claim that distinction. Several European companies claim that distinction. The Mars company may also have a case. Lindt and Ghiradelli have bar chocolate varieties that have been constantly produced since around the 1850’s. Whether they were individually wrapped all depends. Lindt bars were individually wrapped in some markets in the 1880’s, and varieties that have been in constant production for at least 100 years.

Several chocolate bars varieties have changed manufacturers, making this question rather difficult.. I do not believe that Hershey’s has the pre-eminent distinction though, nor any of the largest manufacturers except Mars..

British English and Canadian English and International English does not include chocolate as ‘candy’.

Try doing some research: I think you might find the answer does not lie in the US, much less Hershey’s. Hershey’s own site admits that it started making chocolate for coating confectionery in 1894.

Donald asks…

When do I stop giving my dog puppy food?

My dachshund just turned 2 in April. He still eats puppy food. I was wondering when I should start giving him adult food? Also, does anyone have any suggestions on behavior training. He is very hyper and very bad whenever I have company. Even though he is so bad, I love him and want him to be happy.

Justin answers:

~ Please change your dog to a HIGH QUALITY dog food. No grocery store or pet store food. Your dog is ready for adult food and should be feed nothing but the best.

+All dog foods are not created equal. There is a huge difference in ingredients, quality of ingredients and company standards. When wondering what to get or comparing your current food it is best to do as much research as possible.

Your options are a raw diet, which is one of the greatest diets for dogs. To learn more go to www.barfworld.com. Raw really means nothing cooked; meat, bones and organs. This is not to be confused with allowing your dog to eat cooked bones, cooked bones are harmful, raw bones are not. This is the dog’s ancestral diet. If you think a dog should not be eating raw meat, go back and study wolves. Ask yourself what year was dog food made and then how long have dogs been around without our help of over processed dog food and gravy.

Another option is kibble and wet food. I think a good choice is both. Feeding Kibble 2x a day 12 hours apart and wet food 2x a week in place of 1 feeding of equal calories is a good balance. When you are looking for a healthy dog food it is important that not only the kibble be high quality but the wet food, treats and chews be high quality as well.

Foods to avoid: Pedigree, Beneful, Purina, Iams, Nutro, Alpo, Ol Roy, Mighty Dog, Ceser, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Purina, Royal Canin, Eagle Pack (not to be confused with Eagle Pack Holistic) and of course all grocery store brands of dog food!

These foods have low quality ingredients that can cause allergies, diabetes, bloat, overweight, oily skin, excessive and or runny stool and a myriad of other problems. Most of these brands are owned by companies like Del Monte, Proctor and Gamble, Mars and Nestle. Do you really believe that a company like Proctor and Gamble who makes beauty products, household cleaning supplies, baby items, prescription drugs and many others is the best suited company to make quality products for dogs? 50% of Mars is pet food, 45% is unhealthy snacks like candy bars. Does this sound like the best company to make dog food? All of these companies have one thing in common, they have the advertising to make you believe pictures of meat and veggies and healthy dogs running around on the commercials is what you will get. Knowing the truth about what is in these foods is devastating.

Quality dog foods: Innova, California Natural, EVO, Karma, Wellness, Wellness Core, Orijen, Canidae, Merricks, Artemis, Taste of the Wild, Nature’s Variety, Solid Gold-Barking at the Moon and Timberwolf.

Here are several websites to do your own research, which I highly suggest. A lot of questions here about dog’s health problems are a direct result of the food you are feeding. Read the ingredients label on the back, go to the website and see who owns the dog food, look up the ingredients and learn why it is used and what the pros and cons are. Changing to a healthy low grain, no grain dog food will relieve most of your dog aliments and give you a healthier and happier dog.

Richard asks…

Would a vegan use animal-free products manufactured by a company that ALSO manufacturers animal products?

If being a vegan is about reducing animal suffering as much as possible, wouldn’t supporting a company that ALSO manufactures animal products (even if what was purchased WAS vegan or animal-free) be somewhat contradictory to that goal?

Justin answers:

True enough, many companies that make vegan and vegetarian products are also the same companies that make non vegan and vegetarian products..A good example of this is Boca which is owned by Kraft (which is owned by Altria formerly know as Philip Morris).

Here is a list:

Kraft Foods has bought out Boca Burgers. Boca is the largest veggie burger producer in the U.S. Kraft is home to Oscar Mayer, Breyers Yogurt, Cheez Whiz, Jell-O and Velveeta, among other brands. Kraft is owned by tobacco giant Phillip Morris.

ConAgra has bought out Lightlife. Lightlife makes meat substitutes, such as Smart Deli slices, Smart Bacon, and Gimme Lean Sausage and Beef, among other items. ConAgra owns many brands, including Healthy Choice, Butterball, Bumblebee, Slim Jim and Armour. ConAgra is also North America’s largest food service supplier.

General Mills owns Cascadian Farm and Muir Glen. Cascadian Farm produces a wide variety of frozen vegetarian entrees; Muir Glen sells organic tomato sauces. General Mills is home to Betty Crocker, Hamburger Helper, Yoplait, Wheaties, and Lucky Charms cereal, to name just a few brands.

Smucker owns After the Fall, Santa Cruz Organic and R.W. Knudsen juices and natural sodas. Smucker makes name-brand jams, jellies, preserves and peanut butter.

Heinz owns nearly 20 percent of the Hain Celestial Group (a merger of the Hain Food Group and Celestial Seasonings). The Hain Celestial Group includes Westbrae, Garden of Eden, Arrowhead Mills, Health Valley, Terra Chips, Celestial Seasonings teas, and Earth’s Best Organic Baby Food, among other brands. Additionally, Yves Veggie Cuisine, manufacturer of meat analogs merged with Hain. Heinz holdings include Boston Market, Kibbles and Bits, StarKist tuna and Heinz ketchup.

Dean Foods has become the largest dairy processor and distributor in the United States after its merger with dairy giant Suiza, which manufactures Sun Soy brand soymilk.

M&M/Mars has acquired Seeds of Change, an organic seed company that also sells ready-made products like organic pasta sauces and salsas as well as grain-based side dishes. M&M/Mars produces candy and chocolate bars, such as Starburst, Skittles, Snickers, Milky Way and M&Ms.
