I love the holidays. Almost every year growing up I would end up with a case of strep throat, but that never put a damper on my holiday spirit. My Grandmother and Great Aunt would always visit from New Jersey and stay with us for a week or two. Our house was full of love, festive merriment and of course tons of baking in the kitchen. One of my favorite things to bake during the holiday was those premade turnovers found in the freezer section of the grocery store. This week the Sunday Supper team and Gallo Family Vineyards are sharing their favorite holiday traditions to celebrate the release of two delicious holiday blend wines. I resurrected my favorite tradition of making turnovers for the family, but decided to try my hand at a homemade filling. Armed with Gallo’s Holiday White Blend these amazing Caramel Apple Turnovers were the final result.
Gallo Family Vineyard’s limited edition wines have been a part of their family for years, but of course they couldn’t resist releasing them in time for the holidays. I’m a big fan of Gallo’s Moscato, so the Holiday White Blend was perfect for adding to my turnover filling. With hints of crisp green apple and sweet caramel it was just the extra boost of flavor for my simmering apples.
After the caramel apple filling cooled, I added little dollops to the center of cut puff pastry squares and sealed them with a fork.
After sealing the turnovers I lightly spooned some egg wash over them. Note to self. Send my sister a pastry brush (or two).
Once the turnovers were fully baked and cooled, I drizzled with extra caramel sauce and a little powdered sugar. I loved how something so simple turned into a gorgeous and special dessert blending past holiday memories with the present.

Ingredients
3 large Granny Smith apples diced (1/4 inch cubes)
3 Tablespoons butter
¾ Cup light brown sugar
½ Cup Gallo Family Vineyards Apple & Caramel holiday white blend
1½ teaspoons of cinnamon
¼ teaspoon salt
¾ Tablespoon corn starch
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
10 unwrapped caramels diced into small squares
1 box puff pastry
1 egg beaten
Caramel sauce for drizzling
Instructions
In a large sauce pan, melt butter over medium heat.
Add brown sugar, salt, vanilla and cinnamon and cook while stirring until sugar is melted.
Add apples and Gallo wine to brown sugar mixture and cook until apples are tender and sauce is reduced (10-15 minutes).
Add caramel bits and stir until completely melted and combined with the apple mixture.
In a small bowl, stir together cornstarch and 1 tablespoon cold water to form a slurry.
Pour cornstarch slurry into apples, stir to combine thoroughly, and cook for another minute or two until sauce thickens. Remove from heat to cool.
When apple mixture is completely cooled, preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Unfold puff pastry sheets on a parchment paper covered baking sheet and cut each sheet into 9 squares. You will have 18 squares. Use two baking sheets if necessary.
Spoon about 1 Tablespoon of the apples mixture onto the center of each square.
Fold pastry dough over from corner to corner into a triangle shape and press edges together with a fork to seal.
Brush turnovers lightly and evenly with beaten egg.
Bake for 20-25 minutes in the preheated oven, until turnovers are puffed and lightly browned. Cool turnovers, drizzle with additional caramel sauce or powdered sugar and serve.
