I am so excited for this week’s #SundaySupper!  I am all about a fun dessert and this week is awesome!  Today the Sunday Supper crew is sharing delicious recipes from Shaina Olmanson’s cookbook, Desserts in Jars.  To make it even more fantastic, many of the bloggers participating this week are giving away copies of Desserts in Jars!  Sweet!

You may remember when I made this Ooey, Gooey Pull-Apart Cinnamon Bread for a desserts in jars event. That cinnamon bread was so good, and the cookbook has a ton more of super recipes. This week, participants are putting their own spin on recipes from the book.  My inspiration was a recipe for Banana Buttermilk Trifles that Nicole from Daily Dish Recipes featured a few months back.  I decided to layer multiple flavors and created these amazing Chocolate and Banana Ice Box Trifle in individual mini mason jars.

Typically a trifle is made with sponge cake as one of the main ingredients. I wanted a relaxing summertime dessert, so I switched up the sponge cake to graham crackers.  I continued with the icebox style theme and layered the chocolate and banana pudding with fresh bananas.

This dessert could not be easier to put together. I used instant pudding and a combination of crushed graham crackers and chocolate chip Teddy Grahams.  Since Jed is super picky (even with desserts), I made a special chocolate fudge and white chocolate pudding flavor combination.  Color me surprised when he didn’t even want to try it, but asked for some whipped cream on a spoon.  The kid is nuts.

The hardest part of making this dessert is the layering.  If you aren’t worried about a little smearing of the contents as you layer, then it’s easy as pie.  Trying to carefully layer and fill the jars for a good photo was a little tougher.  A layered dessert in a jar is a great way to get little ones helping in the kitchen too.  They can decide for themselves what flavor combinations to make, and if it gets a little messy, I am sure they won’t mind.

I love the flavor combo of chocolate and bananas.  When this dessert sits in the fridge, the graham layers absorb moisture from the other ingredients and get nice and soft.  The graham cracker pieces give just enough texture to the smooth pudding.  This dessert took no time at all either.  I forget how easy pudding is to make, and it’s always so yummy!  Next time I think I may have to try making a cookies ‘n cream version.

I already mentioned above, that a bunch of the bloggers participating this week will be giving away copies of Desserts in Jars, but that is not all!  If you come join us during the #SundaySupper Chat, and you could win Tickets to the Food and Wine Conference, and a 2 night stay during the conference, at the gorgeous host hotel Rosen Shingle Creek.  Everyone that joins the chat will be entered to win!  How cool is that!  I know I would love to win since I am dying to get my tail down to the conference.  It is going to ROCK!  And just in case you don’t want to enter a giveaway to win a cookbook, you can purchase Desserts In Jars HERE.  Now head on over and check out all the FAB desserts in jars!

Recipe type: Dessert

Cuisine: American

Ingredients

Crushed Graham crackers

1 box instant banana cream pudding

1 box instant chocolate fudge pudding

1 banana sliced

Whipped topping

Instructions

Prepare the instant pudding according to the package directions and place in refrigerator to thicken

In clean/dry small mason jars, start by layering crushed graham cracker pieces in the bottom of each jar.

(I don’t like the graham crackers pulverized to crumbs. Some larger pieces are good for texture, but it’s all personal preference.)

Next in each jar, spoon a layer of banana pudding, followed by a layer of sliced bananas

Next in each jar, spoon a layer of whipped topping, followed by a layer of chocolate pudding

Next in each jar, spoon a layer of graham cracker pieces, followed by a layer of chocolate or banana pudding, your choice.

In fact, you can alter the layers to what suits your flavor preference best.

As you can see from the photos, I have quite a few different variations of layering.

Place in the refrigerator to chill well, and allow graham pieces to soften.

Remove from refrigerator, uncover and top with whipped topping and a sprinkling of graham cracker pieces

Serve.
