After a hectic day at work, you crave escape. Retreat into the arms of nature by setting up your bathroom the right way. You must think of each and every element in your bathroom and how it interacts with the available space. Does any of them occupy a larger surface than necessary?

In today’s stressful times, it is increasingly difficult to find a space that offers tranquility.

Whether you are looking to redecorate your small bathroom or design one from scratch, today’s post will offer some quick tips on how to do so and as a bonus, plenty of photographic inspiration! You probably wonder how can one make a small washing room functional, without compromising in aesthetics.

Bathrooms have always been that spot where people enjoy a bit of quiet time and gather their energy before plunging themselves into yet another crazy day, or where they unwind after having spent a day in chaos, dust and pollution.

Your bathroom is often the first place you head to, once you wake up and probably the last one you visit, just before you hit the sack at night. Its interiors can play an important role in setting a certain ‘mood’ and helping you ease into and out of the day. It is surprising then, that most people simply overlook bathrooms when thinking of a design and style for their home.

So, whether you are looking to redecorate a tiny bathroom or simply to accessorise your existing space, you’d do well to add little touches of nature to your bathroom.Focus on three main areas:

Walls

Bathrooms come in all shapes and sizes. In cities though, you’d be lucky to have anything larger than a small size. The best way to offset this problem is to play with colours, specifically lighter shades. Choose pastel tiles suggestive of airwater elements think white, beige, lemon, baby blues or pinks, optionally with very tiny , delicate prints.

The same goes for the flooring too. Make sure floor tiles complement the colours on the wall, are non-slip, and bring in lots of texture. You can choose from a new range of wall designs tiles that offer a ‘wood feel’, or recreate the ambience of a spa, or bring in interesting mosaic patterns.

Today , functionality co-exists with serenity in a beautifully designed space, a private space that reflects one’s needs and preferences. Bathroom designs are being seen as a space within home that serves as a retreat.

Another way to dress up drab bathroom walls, is to hang a couple of waterproof paintings. Select paintings of outdoor scenes, maybe something abstract that reminds you of open space, clouds, sky, or a forest thick with green trees. This costs a pittance and takes up none of your precious space. l To get an actual touch of greenery, you could always go the time-tested way and place a money-plant or other small plant in an attractive glass bottle on the window sill.

Colours and lighting

Choose floral or leaf motifs for your hand towels, soap dish, light lamp shade, and other accessories. Suspend a pretty lampshade in the shape of a flower or a leaf from the ceiling above the washbasin. It will give you the light you need to see your face clearly.

For soft lighting, aromatic candles with natural scents like those of vanilla, pine, jasmine, rose, lavender, etc., can take away the musty, wet smell of a bathroom and create a relaxed ambience at the same time.If you can, replace the mirror with an even bigger one.Used strategically, mirrors make your space appear bigger than it really is.

The use of fresh flowers, plants or bonsai to keep you connected with nature. If possible, have large glass windows that open on to a small garden with greenery . When picking fixtures and fittings, avoid sharp edges or shapes, choose softer elements.

Hardware and fixtures

One of the reasons we love nature so much is our inherent connection with the outdoors. Hence, you should try and use natural living elements in design, such as wood, cotton, leather, and sea-grass. For a rugged highlight, opt for a single wall made out of natural rock. A simple palette of stone and wood will result in an organic and natural-looking bath.

Putting in chiseled granite stone basins or if the budget allows, a granite bathtub, will go a long way to achieve that natural touch. Roughly cut on the outside, these bathtubs and basins are rounded and soft on the inside.

If it is a modern setting, use two three elements and create a clean-cut look for the bathroom. Keep in mind the size and style of your space before you choose any material or fixtures. These days, you get many options with sophisticated fittings, temperature and climate control. Variable lights and piped music can be used to set the right mood.

Bathrooms are certainly an important part of any home. They are necessary, functional, and if you show a little ingenuity, they can be beautiful too.
