Professor Christine A. Forsythe was elected to serve on The Commission of the National Association of Schools of Art & Design during the annual meeting in Houston last month. The commission is a small group of individuals from various higher educational institutions with art and design programs who review all self-study materials and vote on accreditation for renewal of membership as well as for new membership.

Junior Shaun Egolf and senior Laura Ritenour were awarded first and second place prizes for their research poster presentations given in early October during the 18th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences hosted at the University of Maryland’s Baltimore County campus (UMBC). Posters were also presented by Messiah College students Victoria Koehler, Andrew Nevin and Holly Ross as part of the conference, which included more than 270 presentations by over 325 undergraduate students. The Messiah delegation, coordinated by Sigma Zeta President Bridgette Rodgers also included five other biology students and biological sciences faculty research advisors John Harms and Larry Mylin who each served as judges for the research competition.

The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce that Susan Donat, assistant director of curriculum and assessment, successfully defended her doctoral dissertation study, “The relationship among parental style, involvement, influence and undergraduate student success,” achieving her Ph.D. in administration and leadership studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Beth Transue ’93, librarian/collection development coordinator, was appointed as co-chair of the PA Library Association PA Forward Health Literacy committee. This committee coordinates health literacy initiatives across the state in cooperation with local libraries and corporate, government and nonprofit partners.
MESSIAH 411:
Student Honors Presentation, Dec. 4
On Friday, Dec. 4, the Department of Education will sponsor the Student Honors Presentation of seniors Katelyn Kratz and Amanda Sarac, who will discuss the findings from their qualitative study on disability-related children’s books. Within their presentation, they will explain their writing process and read the book that they wrote to fill one gap in that literature.
Both authors are dual education majors in PreK-4 and special education. Copies of their book will be available for purchase—and will make lovely Christmas gifts. The event will take place in the Jordan atrium/lounge, from 2-3 p.m., with refreshments.
Still needed: a few good elves
Each year, in the spirit of the season, employees volunteer to help with setup, serving and cleanup at the employee Christmas luncheon. This allows our colleagues in dining services and campus events to more fully participate in the event. If you haven’t participated before, or if you’ve had a great time volunteering in the past, we need you this year…and it’s fun!

Christmas trees needed for Christmas traditions dance
The Student Activities Board (SAB) is looking for at least six artificial Christmas trees to borrow for their annual student Christmas Traditions dance event being held on campus in Hitchcock Arena on Dec. 12. If you are willing to lend your unused or unwanted artificial tree to SAB for the event please contact Ashley Burkett at sabdances@gmail.com. The trees are only need for one day and you will get it back. Prelit or unlit trees (green or white), five feet and taller.

The Office of Marketing and Communications is again producing a Highlights brochure to promote the public events occurring on campus during the spring semester. To ensure your public event (i.e. a concert, recital, play, lecture, conference, performance or any other event at which you would welcome the general public) is included, please send the event, date, time, place, contact name, admission charge (if any) and contact phone number to Karen Garlinger (kgarlinger@messiah.edu) no later than TOMORROW (Friday, Dec. 4). To meet press deadlines, late submissions cannot be accepted.
Safety grant
The HM Insurance Group (our workers’ compensation insurance carrier) awarded Messiah College a $5,000 safety grant towards the purchase of an automated stair climbing hand truck. This equipment will aid in moving furniture and large/heavy items up and down stairs in buildings that do not have elevators. Annual campus budget forum is schedule for Jan. 7
The annual campus budget forum is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 7 from noon-1:30 p.m. in Frey 110. There will be a presentation by David Walker, vice president for finance and planning, and a Q&A session. Following feedback from governance groups, College Council is scheduled to vote on potential increases to tuition, room, board and fees on Jan. 21. The forum is open to all employees and attendance is encouraged.

How to make your event a “featured event”:
– Send a 1-2 paragraph article, PLUS a .jpg file or poster about the event to Conference and Event Services at roomres@messiah.edu.
Get campus cancellations and delays
In the event classes are delayed or canceled, only those students and/or employees who have signed up for text alerts will receive a text notice regarding such a delay or closure. A delay or closure notification will also be placed on the home page of the College’s website, as well as being available by calling the emergency information line at 717-691-6084; a recording will provide you with a date and time of the most recent message. Morning announcements are made no later than 6:30 a.m. If in doubt, please check the website or call the information line if you are not signed up for text alerts. This information is NOT provided to the local media. Please note, any notice of a delay and/or cancelation of an EVENT hosted at the college will only be available on the emergency line and not through the text alert system or website. Employees involved in snow removal, facilities, campus events and dining should follow the instructions given by their respective supervisory staff during a delay or closure.
The Bridge readership survey
Last year, The Bridge revamped its look and content by partnering with Skelton Design of Towson, Md., for a redesign of the print edition. We’d like to know what you think of it! Advise a service trip
We’d like to offer the opportunity to employees to participate in and advise a student service trip over J-term break or spring break. Advisors serve alongside students, assist student leaders in facilitation of reflection and devotions and assist in any problem-solving that may arise. All costs are covered for advisors.

Congratulations to Diane Hunsinger, the winner of the Workplace Safety Committee’s safety contest question for November. She will receive a $50 gift card. The question for November was: clorox regular bleach is used on campus and is probably found in many homes. Under first aid measures on the Safety Data Sheet, what should you do for ingestion? The correct answer was “C. call a poison control center.”
Remember that for each of the remaining months of the contest, a question will be distributed to all employees via mass email. All correct answers for the month will go into a prize drawing; each month the prize is a $50 gift card. Watch your email on Monday, Dec. 7 for the next question!
Dr. Bernardo Michael sabbatical reflections lecture, Dec. 9
Dr. Bernardo Michael of the history department spent his sabbatical year in South Asia doing research. On Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 4 p.m. in Boyer 131 he will offer reflections on his the research he did during that time in a lecture entitled “In the footsteps of Charles Freer Andrews (1871-1940): Reflections on a Sabbatical Year in South Asia.” The lecture is being co-sponsored by the Department of History, The School of Humanities and the Office of Faculty Development.
