Proceeds from this concert benefit the volunteer fire/rescue service of Carrollton, Va. and nearby mutual aid districts in Smithfield and northern Suffolk. Your donations to this non-profit volunteer fire/rescue department serve the community by enabling the purchase of needed medical, rescue, fire fighting, training supplies and equipment. Fire Station-10 is located on Route 17 between the Crittenden and James River Bridges. Hot dogs and soft drinks are available during the concert. Please bring your own chair.

In the 1890s, the U.S. Army believed it could replace horses with popular new “safety bicycles.” Testing this theory, the army sent 20 African-American soldiers on a 2,000-mile ride from Fort Missoula, Montana, to St. Louis, Missouri. This program traces the group’s route across the American West through the eyes of two riders: the enthusiastic white officer and a black first sergeant, whose experience guided and motivated the enlisted men.

When Prometheus warns Pyrrha and Deucalion that Zeus intends to send a great flood to destroy the Earth, they provision a chest containing all the knowledge that humanity will need after the waters recede. Water Relics envisions the Museum as the couple’s ark—its architecture holding all that humanity will need as sea levels rise. Thompson and Alonzo add another layer to the myth, imagining a world where Pyrrha and Deucalion’s people do not die in the flood, but instead evolve to live underwater. Come follow the story as the duo moves from Huber Court to the Hofheimer Porcelain Galleries to the Kaufman Theater—progressing from the shallows to the deep—and becoming immersed in their underwater world.

Shuck it up with the return of Smartmouth’s Annual Oyster Roast. As Jonathan Swift once said, “He was a bold man that first ate an oyster,” so be bold and join us for a day of salty bivalves and tasty beer. From 2-6pm, enjoy all the fresh Eastern Shore-grown oysters you can eat for just $20, courtesy of Ballard Fish & Oyster Company and Cherrystone Aqua-Farms.Capt’n Crabby food truck will also be on site to round out the seafood feast and Cole Stevens and the Delta Daggers will play from 4:30-6:30pm. A limited number of wristbands to access the oyster area will be sold in the tasting room on the day of the event.

A Dance Tribute by the Elbert Watson Dance Company. Watson’s piece is a homage to the melding of sacred, hallowed grounds in conjunction with events which shaped and molded the cultural, historical and spiritual fabric of African-Americans in Hampton Roads.
